Minnesota Lake Maps: Handcrafted 3D Wooden Lake Maps for Your Cabin or Lake Home
Share
If you are looking for a free DNR lake map to figure out where the walleye are holding, this is not that. The Minnesota DNR Lake Finder is a good starting point but it is built for navigation, not for what I make.
I started Horn Dog Maps because I wanted a map for myself that was actually shaped like my favorite lake. I have always been the kind of person that wanted to DIY things so I figured out how to make one for myself.
I have Minnesota lake maps available for lakes all over the state, including many of the most popular Minnesota lakes people search for. This post covers what goes into them, which lakes I have already mapped, and how to find yours.
What a Horn Dog Maps Minnesota Lake Map Actually Is
Every map starts as a stack of wood sitting in my shop. From there I build it one layer at a time using the lake's actual depth data. Each depth layer gets cut separately and stacked so the finished piece shows the lake in three dimensions. The deeper the water, the more layers come off. You can see where the lake drops away and where it stays shallow, all of it rendered in wood.
The lake name, county roads, and surrounding geography are laser etched into the surface. The water layers are painted a light blue to dark blue gradient so as the lake gets deeper the blue gets darker. Every map comes ready to hang.
These are not mass produced. I make each one when it is ordered, for the specific lake the person actually wants. That is the whole point.
Why Wood
I could print these on paper or acrylic. A lot of people do. That is not what I wanted to build.
I like working with wood. Every piece has its own grain and character, and no two maps turn out exactly alike. That is part of what makes them feel like they belong in a cabin instead of looking like something that came off a printer. There is also something about the weight of a wooden map on a wall that feels different from a poster. It feels like it is supposed to be there.
I use locally sourced wood for every map I make. That part matters to me.
Popular Minnesota Lake Maps I Make
I have over 1,700 lakes in my catalog across the US and Canada, including many of the most popular Minnesota lake maps people search for. Here are some of the lakes I get asked about most often.
Mille Lacs Lake
One of the most requested maps I make. Mille Lacs is one of the biggest lakes in the state and one of the most fished, and the map shows why. The way the structure drops off the south end, the long flat on the east side. If you have spent time on Mille Lacs, you will recognize it immediately.

Lake Minnetonka
Lake Minnetonka is a complicated lake to map because of all the bays and channels, and that is exactly what makes the finished map interesting. The outline is unmistakable to anyone who has spent time out there. This one tends to stop people when they see it for the first time.

Lake Vermilion
Lake Vermilion in St. Louis County is one of my personal favorites to map. The lake has a lot going on, islands, bays, irregular shoreline, and the finished piece reflects all of it. If Vermilion is your lake, this one is worth looking at.

Gull Lake, The Whitefish Chain of Lakes, Otter Tail Lake, Lake Kabetogama, Leech Lake
These are some of the lakes that come up regularly when people find Horn Dog Maps. If yours is on this list, the map is already in my catalog. If it is not, reach out. I am always adding new lakes and can usually work with a lake that is not already in the system.
How to Find Your Lake
Browse the Minnesota collection and search by lake name. If it is in my catalog it will come up. If it is not there, reach out. I have added lakes by request before and I am usually open to it. Whether I can do it depends on what the depth data looks like for that specific lake, but it is worth asking.
One thing worth knowing: the maps look different depending on the lake. A lake with dramatic depth changes is going to have more visible layer variation than a shallower lake. All lakes have either 8 layers for the standard definition or 15 layers for the high definition versions. But even if your specific lake is not dramatic looking, that does not make it unimportant. If it means something to you, it is more interesting than a lake that looks cool but you have no connection to. If you want to know what a specific lake will look like before ordering, reach out and I can tell you what the data looks like for that one.

Where These Maps End Up
Most of them go on the wall of a cabin or lake home. Some end up in living rooms, garages, or offices. I have had people order them as gifts for parents who have had a lake place for decades, as realtor closing gifts for lake homes, and as something to put up in a cabin that has been in the family for years.
The common thread is usually the same. Someone has a specific lake that matters to them, and they want something on the wall that shows it the way they know it. Not a generic lake print, not a poster. The actual lake, in three dimensions, built to last.
That is what I make.
Frequently Asked Questions
Questions I get asked often about Minnesota lake maps.
Are these decorative lake maps or functional fishing maps?
They are decorative wooden wall maps. The depth information is accurate, but these are built to hang in a lake home or cabin. They are not waterproof charts or navigation tools. I would also not recommend hanging them outside. Sun and humidity would wreak havoc on them.
Do you have a map of my lake?
I have over 1,700 lakes in my catalog, and Minnesota makes up a significant part of that. Mostly because this is where I was born and raised, and I started with the lakes I fished. Browse all Minnesota lake maps to search by lake name. If your lake is not listed, send me a message. I can often add lakes by request.
What does a Minnesota lake map cost?
Pricing varies by map size and wood type. Browse the Minnesota collection for current pricing on specific lakes.
How long does it take to make and ship a lake map?
Each map is made to order, so there is lead time involved. Check the current turnaround time on the product page or reach out directly if you are working toward a specific date.
Can I get a Minnesota lake map as a gift?
Yes, and that is one of the more common reasons people order them. If you know which lake matters to the person you are buying for, the rest is straightforward. Browse all Minnesota lake maps or reach out if you need help finding a specific lake.
Do you only make Minnesota lake maps?
Not even close. I have over 1,700 lakes in my catalog across all 50 states and Canada. Minnesota makes up a big part of that because this is where I started, but I have maps of lakes in Wisconsin, Michigan, Colorado, Texas, and just about everywhere else people fish and boat. If you have a lake, there is a good chance I already have it. Browse the full collection or reach out and I can check for you.
