Our standard 3D lake maps are built with 8 layers — one land layer and seven water layers graduating from light blue at the surface to deep blue at the bottom. The HD Maps take that a step further: 15 layers total, one land and fourteen water, giving you twice the depth resolution and significantly more detail in the contours, drop-offs, and structure of the lake basin.

Because of the increased layer count HD Maps are available in XL size and larger only.

Notable HD Lakes

• Lake Tahoe — California and Nevada. One of the clearest and deepest lakes in North America at over 1,600 feet, Lake Tahoe rewards the extra resolution more than almost any lake we map. The dramatic underwater shelf drop-offs, the deep central basin, and the complexity of the nearshore structure are all captured in extraordinary detail at the HD layer count.
• Lake Michigan — Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The only Great Lake lying entirely within the United States, Lake Michigan's vast basin, complex shoals, and dramatic underwater ridge systems make it one of the most compelling HD maps in our catalog. The additional layers reveal structure that simply disappears at standard resolution.
• Lake of the Ozarks — Benton, Camden, Miller, and Morgan Counties, Missouri. With over 1,150 miles of shoreline and a basin that ranges from shallow flats to deep main channel cuts, Lake of the Ozarks benefits enormously from the additional depth layers. The HD version captures the full complexity of the Osage River impoundment in a way the standard map simply can't.
• Lake Powell — Utah and Arizona. A canyon reservoir of extraordinary depth and complexity, Lake Powell's labyrinthine arms and dramatic depth variation across the Colorado Plateau make it one of the most visually striking HD maps we produce. The fourteen water layers bring the full vertical drama of the canyon walls and lake floor to life.
• Lake Superior — Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, Lake Superior plunges to over 1,300 feet — deeper than many people realize. The HD layer count reveals the full dramatic profile of the lake floor, from the shallow Apostle Islands shoreline to the profound central basin. A map of genuine geological wonder.
• Lake George — Warren and Essex Counties, New York. One of the most strikingly clear lakes in the eastern United States, Lake George reaches depths of over 190 feet in a long, narrow basin flanked by the Adirondack peaks. The HD layers capture the intricate underwater terrain of this Adirondack gem with a level of detail that does justice to the lake's legendary clarity.
• Lake Mead — Arizona and Nevada. The largest reservoir in the United States by volume, Lake Mead's submerged canyon terrain — the original Colorado River channel, drowned side canyons, and the inundated town of St. Thomas — makes for one of the most geologically complex and historically fascinating HD maps in our catalog.
• Flathead Lake — Lake and Flathead Counties, Montana. The largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, Flathead reaches depths of over 370 feet with a strikingly varied bottom — shallow bays and rocky islands in the north, a deep central trough dropping sharply from the eastern shoreline. The HD layers reveal the full complexity of one of the most beautiful lake basins in the country.
• Lake Lanier — Hall, Forsyth, Dawson, Gwinnett, and Lumpkin Counties, Georgia. The most visited Corps of Engineers lake in the United States, Lake Lanier was built on the Chattahoochee River and still contains the drowned foundations of the communities it displaced. The intricate finger coves, deep main channel, and varying basin structure make it a rewarding subject for the HD layer treatment.
• Crater Lake — Klamath County, Oregon. The deepest lake in the United States at nearly 2,000 feet, Crater Lake fills a volcanic caldera with near-perfect circular geometry and an almost sheer underwater cliff dropping from the rim. The HD layers capture the extraordinary vertical profile of this geological wonder in detail no standard map can match — arguably the single most compelling lake in our entire catalog for the HD format.
