Collection: HD Depth Maps

Our standard 3D lake maps are built with 8 layers — one land layer and seven water layers graduating from light blue at the surface to deep blue at the bottom. The HD Maps take that a step further: 15 layers total, one land and fourteen water, giving you twice the depth resolution and significantly more detail in the contours, drop-offs, and structure of the lake basin.

Because of the increased layer count HD Maps are available in XL size and larger only.

Notable HD Lakes

  • Lake Tahoe — California and Nevada. One of the clearest and deepest lakes in North America at over 1,600 feet, Lake Tahoe rewards the extra resolution more than almost any lake we map. The dramatic underwater shelf drop-offs, the deep central basin, and the complexity of the nearshore structure are all captured in extraordinary detail at the HD layer count.
  • Lake Michigan — Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The only Great Lake lying entirely within the United States, Lake Michigan's vast basin, complex shoals, and dramatic underwater ridge systems make it one of the most compelling HD maps in our catalog. The additional layers reveal structure that simply disappears at standard resolution.
  • Lake of the Ozarks — Benton, Camden, Miller, and Morgan Counties, Missouri. With over 1,150 miles of shoreline and a basin that ranges from shallow flats to deep main channel cuts, Lake of the Ozarks benefits enormously from the additional depth layers. The HD version captures the full complexity of the Osage River impoundment in a way the standard map simply can't.
  • Lake Powell — Utah and Arizona. A canyon reservoir of extraordinary depth and complexity, Lake Powell's labyrinthine arms and dramatic depth variation across the Colorado Plateau make it one of the most visually striking HD maps we produce. The fourteen water layers bring the full vertical drama of the canyon walls and lake floor to life.
  • Lake Superior — Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, Lake Superior plunges to over 1,300 feet — deeper than many people realize. The HD layer count reveals the full dramatic profile of the lake floor, from the shallow Apostle Islands shoreline to the profound central basin. A map of genuine geological wonder.
  • Lake George — Warren and Essex Counties, New York. One of the most strikingly clear lakes in the eastern United States, Lake George reaches depths of over 190 feet in a long, narrow basin flanked by the Adirondack peaks. The HD layers capture the intricate underwater terrain of this Adirondack gem with a level of detail that does justice to the lake's legendary clarity.
  • Lake Mead — Arizona and Nevada. The largest reservoir in the United States by volume, Lake Mead's submerged canyon terrain — the original Colorado River channel, drowned side canyons, and the inundated town of St. Thomas — makes for one of the most geologically complex and historically fascinating HD maps in our catalog.
  • Flathead Lake — Lake and Flathead Counties, Montana. The largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, Flathead reaches depths of over 370 feet with a strikingly varied bottom — shallow bays and rocky islands in the north, a deep central trough dropping sharply from the eastern shoreline. The HD layers reveal the full complexity of one of the most beautiful lake basins in the country.
  • Lake Lanier — Hall, Forsyth, Dawson, Gwinnett, and Lumpkin Counties, Georgia. The most visited Corps of Engineers lake in the United States, Lake Lanier was built on the Chattahoochee River and still contains the drowned foundations of the communities it displaced. The intricate finger coves, deep main channel, and varying basin structure make it a rewarding subject for the HD layer treatment.
  • Crater Lake — Klamath County, Oregon. The deepest lake in the United States at nearly 2,000 feet, Crater Lake fills a volcanic caldera with near-perfect circular geometry and an almost sheer underwater cliff dropping from the rim. The HD layers capture the extraordinary vertical profile of this geological wonder in detail no standard map can match — arguably the single most compelling lake in our entire catalog for the HD format.

Custom 3D Wooden Lake Maps - Handcrafted in Minnesota

Discover the best handcrafted 3D wooden lake maps that bring your favorite waterways to life. Each piece is meticulously crafted with up to 15 layers, locally sourced hardwood frames, and personalized details that make it uniquely yours.

About Our 3D Wooden Lake Maps

When you choose one of our custom lake maps, you're getting a one-of-a-kind piece of functional art that captures the depth and beauty of your favorite lake. Each map is carefully constructed using multiple layers of precision-cut Baltic birch, creating a stunning three-dimensional representation of the actual bathymetry (underwater topography) of the lake.

Our standard maps feature 8 total layers: one natural birch land layer with a clear coat finish, plus 7 water layers that transition from light blue in the shallows to deep navy in the deepest parts of the lake. For those who want even more detail and drama, our HD maps use 15 layers total with 14 water layers, creating an incredibly detailed gradient that showcases every contour of the lakebed.

What sets these pieces apart is the attention to detail. Roads, lake information, and other geographic details are laser-etched directly into the land layer. Each map can be personalized at no extra charge with markers for your cabin, a heart where you met your sweetheart, or custom text placed anywhere on the map. The frames are crafted from rough-cut lumber sourced right here in Minnesota and milled down in my shop. You can choose from walnut, cherry, maple, or black-stained frames, with all natural wood options finished with shellac to bring out their beautiful grain.

These maps are designed to be displayed proudly. They hang securely using a French cleat system, and you can add an optional acrylic cover for protection and a polished, finished look. The completed thickness is 1 5/8 inches, giving each piece a substantial, gallery-quality presence on your wall.

With over 1,600 lakes already mapped and ready to cut, chances are your lake is available. If it's not on the list, I can create a custom map for you. Every file is created by me from actual bathymetric data, not purchased templates from marketplaces. This is true custom craftsmanship, and the typical turnaround time is just 1-2 weeks (slightly longer during the holiday rush), which is significantly faster than the 2-3 months many other artists require. Free shipping to all US addresses is included, and international shipping is available as well.

Why Choose Our Lake Maps

Veteran-Owned and Operated

As a Minnesota veteran, I take pride in every piece that leaves my workshop. This isn't a faceless operation or a dropshipping scheme. You're supporting a small, American-made business built on integrity and craftsmanship.

True Custom Craftsmanship

I create every cut file myself using real bathymetric data. Unlike competitors who purchase generic files from Etsy or overseas sources, every map I make is an original creation. This is not a paint-by-numbers kit being passed off as original art. It's genuine craftsmanship from start to finish.

Locally Sourced, Sustainably Made

The frames come from rough-cut Minnesota lumber that I mill myself. The wood options (walnut, cherry, maple) showcase the natural beauty of the grain with a shellac finish, while the black option provides a modern, dramatic contrast. Everything is made right here in the USA.

Fast Turnaround Time

While other lake map artists make you wait 2-3 months, I typically complete orders in 1-2 weeks. During peak seasons like Black Friday and Christmas, this may extend slightly, but it's still significantly faster than the competition.

Extensive Lake Database

With over 1,600 lakes already mapped and ready to cut, chances are excellent that your lake is available. If it's not, I can create a custom map using professional bathymetric data.

Premium Quality at Every Level

From the precision laser cutting to the hand-finished frames and the French cleat hanging system, every detail is designed for longevity and beauty. The 1 5/8 inch thickness gives these pieces a substantial, high-end gallery feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are the lake maps made?

+

Each map starts with me creating or retrieving the bathymetric data for your specific lake. I design the cut file myself, then precision laser-cut each layer from Baltic birch plywood. The land layer receives a clear coat finish, while the water layers are stained in a gradient from light blue to dark navy blue, getting progressively darker with depth. I mill the frame from locally sourced rough-cut lumber and finish it with shellac (or stain for the black option). Roads and lake details are laser-etched into the land layer. After assembly, the layers are glued together, the French cleat hanger is attached, and your personalization is added. If you've chosen an acrylic cover, that's installed as the final step.

What's the difference between standard and HD maps?

+

Standard maps have 8 total layers: 1 land layer and 7 water layers. HD maps have 15 total layers: 1 land layer and 14 water layers. The additional layers in the HD version create a more detailed and dramatic gradient effect, showing finer depth variations and contours in the lake. Both versions use the same high-quality materials and construction methods, the HD just provides more dimensional detail for lakes with complex bathymetry or for customers who want maximum visual impact.

What if I don't see my lake on your list?

+

No problem at all. I have over 1,600 lakes already mapped, but if yours isn't included, I can look it up and create a custom map for you. I work directly with bathymetric data sources to design new lake maps, so as long as depth data exists for your lake, I can create it. Just reach out with the lake name and location, and I'll let you know what's possible.

How are the maps shipped?

+

Maps are carefully packaged to ensure they arrive in perfect condition. Shipping is free for all US residents regardless of size. For international orders, shipping is available at an additional cost calculated based on your location. Each map is securely boxed with protective materials to prevent any damage during transit.

What is your turnaround time?

+

Typical turnaround time is 1-2 weeks from order to shipment. During busy periods like Black Friday through Christmas, this may extend slightly as order volume increases, but I work hard to keep wait times as short as possible. This is significantly faster than many competitors who require 2-3 months. You'll receive updates throughout the process so you know exactly when to expect your custom lake map.
