Alpine Lake in Cook County, Minnesota
This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version
Alpine Lake is a pristine 909-acre natural lake in northeastern Minnesota's Cook County, featuring crystal-clear water reaching a maximum depth of 65 feet with approximately 10 miles of scenic shoreline and a moderate average depth creating excellent fish habitat. Located within the Superior National Forest near the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, this remote lake offers exceptional fishing opportunities with Walleye abundance about average historically with outstanding average sizes, most catches ranging between 16 and 22 inches with all fish produced naturally through successful spawning. The 2002 DNR assessment revealed fast Walleye growth rates despite apparent lack of typical forage species, suggesting they may feed on dwarf Cisco too small for standard gill nets. The lake also supports Northern Pike with fast growth rates likely feeding on Cisco or small Lake Whitefish, plus Smallmouth Bass, Lake Whitefish in declining numbers since peak populations in 1984 and 1990, and northern Cisco (Tullibee) described as a dwarf variety creating a unique coldwater forage base. With public boat access and the lake's remote wilderness location ensuring minimal fishing pressure, Alpine Lake is perfect for trophy walleye fishing, Northern Pike angling, boating, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and year-round ice fishing in pristine northeastern Minnesota waters surrounded by boreal forest where moose, black bears, and bald eagles roam freely
Located in the northeastern tip of Minnesota's arrowhead region near the Superior National Forest and Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Alpine Lake sits within Cook County approximately 45 miles northwest of Grand Marais, Minnesota's picturesque harbor village on Lake Superior's North Shore recently named "America's Coolest Small Town" by Budget Travel magazine. The surrounding area provides exceptional access to over one million acres of wilderness recreation including the Boundary Waters with 1,200 miles of canoe routes and over 1,000 pristine lakes, the 310-mile Superior Hiking Trail offering breathtaking overlooks of Lake Superior and inland lakes, and the 57-mile Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway winding through pristine wilderness to the Canadian border. Visitors can explore Grand Marais with its vibrant arts community including the historic Grand Marais Art Colony founded in 1947, Artist's Point with the iconic Grand Marais Lighthouse for sunrise viewing, World's Best Donuts, the North House Folk School teaching traditional northern crafts, exceptional dining at the Angry Trout overlooking the harbor, and Java Moose coffee shop. The region offers year-round outdoor adventures including Lutsen Mountains (the Midwest's largest ski resort with 95 runs), Judge C.R. Magney State Park featuring the mysterious Devil's Kettle waterfall, Cascade River State Park with seven waterfalls in less than a mile, Grand Portage State Park showcasing Minnesota's highest waterfall at 120-foot High Falls, Superior National Golf Course, and endless opportunities for paddling, fishing over 400 area lakes, moose viewing, fall color tours, snowmobiling, dogsledding, and exploring the cultural heritage of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa where ancient trading routes once connected the Great Lakes to the interior wilderness
This beautifully handcrafted laser-cut wooden topographical map of Alpine Lake would make a stunning addition to your northwoods cabin, wilderness retreat, or home, celebrating your connection to this remote Cook County gem within the Superior National Forest. The artistic design features a natural wood top layer that perfectly frames the lake's 909-acre basin and approximately 10 miles of shoreline surrounded by pristine boreal forest near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, while the water depths are represented through a captivating gradient flowing from light blue in the shallower areas to rich deeper blue at the 65-foot maximum depth. Every bay, depth contour, the public boat access, prime trophy walleye fishing zones where naturally reproducing fish average 16 to 22 inches, and the distinctive features of this remote wilderness lake are precisely laser-etched into the multi-layered wood construction, creating a three-dimensional piece of wall art that beautifully captures the pristine character, exceptional walleye fishing heritage sustained by unique dwarf Cisco forage, and wilderness beauty of this beloved Minnesota treasure in the heart of Cook County's legendary outdoor recreation region near Lake Superior's magnificent North Shore

The difference between standard and HD maps is the number of layers. Standard maps have 1 land layer and 7 water layers. " The HD lake maps have 1 land layer and 14 water layers. So twice the detail. The HD Maps are limited to Extra Large, " XX Large, and Gigantic sizes only. On the smaller sizes the depth change of the wood is too extreme and you end up losing detail."

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these actually 3D or just engraved?
These are true 3D layered maps.
- Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
- Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
- HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers
Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.
Where are these made?
Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.
- Design
- Cutting
- Painting
- Assembly
- Frame building
The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.
Do you use real depth data?
Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.
I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.
Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?
Most marketplace sellers:
- Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
- Have no connection to the lakes
- Cannot verify accuracy
- Have long delays if a file is not available
This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.
Because I design everything myself:
- I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
- You get a more accurate map, faster
What is your lead time?
Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.
Tell me about the Cribbage Boards
These are different from the layered maps and are not something you will find elsewhere.
- Made from a solid piece of Maple or Cherry
- The lake is engraved as if drained
- Then filled with blue tinted epoxy that is still transparent
You can see:
- Channels
- Humps
- Points
- Structure
Additional features:
- 2 or 3 track options
- Choice of peg colors
- Hidden peg storage with a magnetic dovetail slider
- Rubber feet so it does not slide on the table
It is a functional game board and a detailed lake model in one.
