Fontana Lake in North Carolina

This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version

Fontana Lake, a majestic 10,230-acre reservoir, is a prominent natural and recreational treasure nestled within Swain and Graham Counties in Western North Carolina. This expansive lake, created by the towering Fontana Dam on the Little Tennessee River, boasts an impressive 238 miles of pristine shoreline. Reaching a remarkable maximum depth of 440 feet, it holds the distinction of being the deepest lake in North Carolina, providing a unique cold-water environment. Surrounded by the protected lands of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Nantahala National Forest, much of its shoreline remains undeveloped, offering an unparalleled wilderness experience.

As a premier destination in North Carolina's mountains, Fontana Lake offers a secluded yet exciting array of outdoor activities. Anglers are drawn to its deep, clear waters for diverse fish populations, including Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Lake Trout, and prized Muskie. The lake's vast surface is ideal for all forms of boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding, with numerous coves and inlets awaiting exploration. Its remote access points provide unparalleled opportunities for hiking into the national park, making Fontana Lake a cherished haven for those seeking natural beauty, tranquility, and adventure in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains.

The difference between standard and HD maps is the number of layers. Standard maps have 1 land layer and 7 water layers. " The HD lake maps have 1 land layer and 14 water layers. So twice the detail. The HD Maps are limited to Extra Large, " XX Large, and Gigantic sizes only. On the smaller sizes the depth change of the wood is too extreme and you end up losing detail."
