Silver Lake in Windsor County, Vermont

This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version

Silver Lake is an 84-acre warm-water lake in the picturesque town of Barnard in Windsor County, Vermont, featuring a maximum depth of 32 feet and approximately two miles of scenic shoreline with nearly half of the lake's perimeter protected as conserved or state park land. Originally called Stebblings' Pond after Benjamin Stebblings who owned land at the outlet where the Barnard General Store now stands, the lake became known as Barnard Pond before being renamed Silver Lake in 1869. As a relatively shallow warm-water body, the lake supports excellent populations of Northern Pike with trophy fish over three pounds regularly caught, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Yellow Perch, Pumpkinseed, Rock Bass, and Brown Bullhead thriving in diverse fish-holding habitat including boat docks, submerged vegetation, rocky points, overhanging trees, and underwater brush. The lake features no motorized watercraft, creating a peaceful atmosphere perfect for paddling even during busy summer days with swimmers, canoes, paddleboats, kayaks, and paddleboards enjoying the tranquil waters. With a large sandy swimming beach at Silver Lake State Park on the northern shore, a public beach and boat launch in the village across from the iconic Barnard General Store dating back to the 1800s, and exceptional ice skating and ice fishing during winter months when the lake freezes, this classic Vermont lake offers year-round recreation just minutes from Woodstock's renowned attractions

Located in Barnard, a classic Vermont hill town chartered July 17, 1761 from the New Hampshire Grants and surrounded by high rolling hills dotted with farms and scenic vistas, Silver Lake sits just six miles from historic Woodstock, consistently ranked among America's prettiest small towns and known as Vermont's premier four-season destination. Silver Lake State Park, established in 1955 when land was donated by Mr. and Mrs. John McDill of Woodstock, Miss Margaret Crosby of Barnard, and Mr. Richard H. Field of Boston, encompasses 35 acres with 40 tent/RV campsites, 7 lean-to sites, token-operated hot showers, picnic pavilion available for group rentals, playground, basketball hoops, horseshoe pits, boat and paddleboard rentals, and nature programs throughout summer. The surrounding area offers exceptional attractions including nearby Woodstock with Vermont's only national park at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park exploring conservation and land stewardship, Billings Farm & Museum (a working 1890s dairy farm founded by railroad magnate Frederick Billings), the Vermont Institute of Natural Science with live raptor exhibits and a bald eagle nest overlook, and Sugarbush Farm's 550 acres for cheese tastings and maple syrup tours. Visitors can explore Quechee Gorge (Vermont's deepest gorge at 165 feet nicknamed "Vermont's Little Grand Canyon"), Simon Pearce glassblowing workshop and restaurant in a restored mill, the iconic Middle Covered Bridge spanning the Ottauquechee River downtown, Saskadena Six ski area (one of America's oldest), Mount Tom and Mount Peg hiking with panoramic views, Woodstock's charming boutique shopping and dining, plus the 60,000-acre Chateauguay No Town wilderness area traversed by the Appalachian Trail with prime wildlife habitat for hiking, hunting, skiing, and snowmobiling where bears outnumber people in this roadless protected forestland

This elegant handcrafted laser-cut wooden topographical map of Silver Lake would make a charming addition to your Barnard cottage, Vermont vacation home, or office, celebrating your connection to this historic warm-water lake at the heart of one of New England's most picturesque hill towns. The artistic design features a natural wood top layer that beautifully frames the lake's compact 84-acre shape and approximately two miles of shoreline, nearly half of which remains protected conservation land, while the water depths are represented through a gentle gradient flowing from light blue in the shallower areas to deeper blue at the 32-foot maximum depth. Every bay, the historic Barnard General Store beach and boat launch in the village, the Silver Lake State Park sandy swimming beach and facilities on the northern shore, rocky points perfect for bass fishing, and the distinctive features of this no-motorboat lake are precisely laser-etched into the multi-layered wood construction, creating a three-dimensional piece of wall art that beautifully captures the peaceful character and warm-water fishing heritage of this beloved Windsor County treasure originally called Stebblings' Pond in 1869 and cherished by generations of Vermonters and visitors from nearby Woodstock

About our Maps

Every map is designed and built in Minnesota. Nothing is outsourced and nothing is imported.

  • Designed in-house. All art files are created by me, not purchased or reused
  • True layered 3D construction. Not engraved or printed
  • More layers, more detail. Most competitors use 3 to 7 layers. These use 8 or 15 layers
  • Original blue depth gradient. Light to dark blue shows water depth clearly
  • Handmade hardwood frames. Built from locally sourced rough sawn lumber, not pre-made frames

These are built to be the most accurate and most detailed 3D lake maps available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these actually 3D or just engraved?

These are true 3D layered maps.

  • Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
  • Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
  • HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers

Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.

Where are these made?

Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.

  • Design
  • Cutting
  • Painting
  • Assembly
  • Frame building

The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.

Do you use real depth data?

Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.

I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.

Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?

Most marketplace sellers:

  • Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
  • Have no connection to the lakes
  • Cannot verify accuracy
  • Have long delays if a file is not available

This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.

Because I design everything myself:

  • I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
  • You get a more accurate map, faster

What is your lead time?

Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.

Tell me about the Cribbage Boards

These are different from the layered maps and are not something you will find elsewhere.

  • Made from a solid piece of Maple or Cherry
  • The lake is engraved as if drained
  • Then filled with blue tinted epoxy that is still transparent

You can see:

  • Channels
  • Humps
  • Points
  • Structure

Additional features:

  • 2 or 3 track options
  • Choice of peg colors
  • Hidden peg storage with a magnetic dovetail slider
  • Rubber feet so it does not slide on the table

It is a functional game board and a detailed lake model in one.
