Lake Anna in Louisa, Spotsylvania, and Orange Counties, Virginia
This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version
Lake Anna is one of Virginia's largest freshwater inland reservoirs at 13,000 acres, stretching 17 miles from tip to tip with an impressive 200 miles of irregular shoreline featuring countless coves and bays, reaching a maximum depth of 80 feet with an average depth of 12 to 15 feet. Created in 1972 when Dominion Energy (formerly Virginia Electric and Power Company) constructed the North Anna Dam on the North Anna River to provide cooling water for the North Anna Nuclear Generating Station, the lake quickly became Virginia's third-largest lake and one of the state's premier recreational destinations. The lake is uniquely divided by three stone dikes into a 9,000-acre public "cold side" and a 4,000-acre private "warm side" that receives heated water discharge from the power plant, with the warm side reaching temperatures of 85 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit during summer months, making it one of the few year-round warm-water swimming destinations in Virginia. This exceptional fishery supports abundant populations of trophy Largemouth Bass consistently ranking in the state's top three for citation catches, Striped Bass and Hybrid Striped Bass maintained through annual stocking programs and providing world-class winter fishing, Black Crappie, Bluegill, Redear Sunfish, Channel Catfish, White Catfish, White Perch, plus the exotic Northern Snakehead that established a self-sustaining population as of 2017. With multiple marinas, public boat launches including facilities at Lake Anna State Park, over 100 waterfront communities along the shores, and easy access just 72 miles south of Washington D.C., the lake is perfect for power boating, sailing, water skiing, wakeboarding, jet skiing, fishing, swimming, kayaking, and year-round recreation with minimal water hazards making safe exploration across the entire lake possible.
Located primarily in Louisa County with portions extending into Spotsylvania and Orange Counties in central Virginia's Piedmont region, Lake Anna sits within easy reach of Richmond (69 miles via I-64), Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, and Northern Virginia, making it an ideal weekend escape from the Washington D.C. metro area. The land now flooded by the lake was originally known as "Gold Hill" and contained the Goodwin Gold Mine where gold was first discovered in 1829 with mining reaching its peak in the 1880s. Lake Anna State Park, opened in 1983 on 2,700 acres with over 15 miles of wooded trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, features a guarded swimming beach, accessible 2-acre fishing pond, boat ramp, 47 campsites, 7 lean-tos, 2 six-bedroom lodges, picnic areas, playgrounds, basketball courts, horseshoe pits, and the historic Gold Mine Gift Shop with exhibits on the area's mining heritage. Hurricane Agnes helped fill the lake ahead of schedule in 1972, flooding the narrow river valley that once held the North Anna and Pamunkey Rivers. The surrounding region offers exceptional attractions including over 80 nearby wineries in central Virginia wine country such as Lake Anna Winery, Everleigh Vineyard, and Fifty Third Winery, plus 14 craft breweries including Cooling Pond Brewery, Log Home Brewing, and Lake Anna Taphouse. Visitors can enjoy waterfront dining at The Cove at Lake Anna, Tim's at Lake Anna on the Boardwalk, Below Deck restaurant, shopping at local markets, mini golf and arcade entertainment, annual events through the Lake Anna Civic Association, and easy day trips to historic sites in Fredericksburg, Richmond's museums and dining, Charlottesville's Monticello and University of Virginia, plus the vibrant communities throughout Virginia's Piedmont region where rolling hills meet pristine waters.
