Buck Lake in Frontenac County, Ontario

This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version

Buck Lake is a 1,940-acre natural lake located in South Frontenac Township approximately 30 kilometers north of Kingston, Ontario, spanning the boundaries of three districts within the township including Loughborough, Bedford and Storrington. The lake consists of two distinct branches connected by a culvert, with the North Branch covering 653 acres and reaching depths up to 100 feet, while the larger South Branch spans 1,213 acres and plunges to an impressive maximum depth of 134 feet, making it one of the deepest lakes in the region. With an average depth of 39 feet across the entire lake and exceptional water clarity, Buck Lake features diverse underwater structure including shallow weed beds providing excellent cover for bass, pike and panfish, along with mid-lake islands featuring rocky shorelines and quick drop-offs, mainland and island points, rock piles and shoals that create premier fish habitat. Fed by Milk Lake and various rivers with its outflow controlled by a dam on Mississauga Creek operated by Energy Ottawa, the lake supports outstanding populations of smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge, walleye, yellow perch, crappie, and lake trout in the deeper South Branch, along with diverse species including common musk turtle, least bittern, cerulean warbler, and the rare five-lined skink lizard that inhabit the surrounding Frontenac Arch Biosphere.

Buck Lake sits on the legendary Frontenac Arch, a narrow belt of Precambrian Canadian Shield rock featuring exposed granite, quartzite, gneiss and marble over one billion years old that links the Adirondack Mountains with the Canadian Shield and separates the St. Lawrence Lowlands from the Great Lakes Lowlands. The lake is located just minutes south of the picturesque village of Westport along County Road 10, affectionately known as the Heart of Rideau Lakes and situated where Upper Rideau Lake meets the stunning granite ridge. Visitors can explore Westport's charming downtown filled with unique shops, boutiques, dockside dining, and the Rideau District Museum featuring artifacts from the 1826 construction of the UNESCO World Heritage Rideau Canal. Area attractions include the spectacular Spy Rock lookout at Foley Mountain Conservation Area offering panoramic views over Upper Rideau Lake and Westport, Scheuermann Vineyard and Winery for wood-fired pizza paired with local wines overlooking Sand Lake, the historic Rideau Canal lockstations dating to 1832, and the nearby 13,000-acre Frontenac Provincial Park with its 22 lakes and 100 kilometers of hiking trails through mixed forests and wetlands perfect for canoeing, kayaking, camping, and wildlife viewing. Kingston is just 35 minutes south offering big-city attractions including historic Fort Frontenac, the Thousand Islands cruises, and downtown waterfront shopping and dining, while the region celebrates its heritage through festivals including the Rideau Valley Art Festival, Westport Music Festival, and Blues on the Rideau.
