Bull Lake in Lincoln County, Montana

This map has 8 layers

Bull Lake is a pristine 1,202-acre natural lake located in the foothills of the Cabinet Mountains in southwestern Lincoln County, Montana, approximately 18 miles south of Troy and 19 miles north of Montana Highway 200 in the Clark Fork valley. The lake stretches across clean, clear waters with 12 miles of scenic shoreline and reaches a maximum depth of 64 feet, creating an ideal environment for both cold-water and warm-water fish species. Montana Highway 56 runs along the east side of the lake, providing convenient access to this remote mountain destination while maintaining its secluded character. Bull Lake sits at an elevation that offers stunning views of the surrounding Cabinet Mountain wilderness, with forested shorelines of pine, fir, and mixed conifers creating a peaceful backdrop for outdoor recreation. The lake is fed by mountain streams and springs that maintain excellent water quality and support diverse aquatic habitats ranging from shallow vegetated bays to deep, cold-water zones. The area surrounding Bull Lake is characterized by relatively undeveloped wilderness, with much of the shoreline remaining natural and protected, though residential development has occurred in select areas along the eastern shore.

Bull Lake offers exceptional year-round fishing opportunities and is known for supporting a diverse fishery that includes brook trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, bull trout, kokanee salmon, northern pike, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, and pumpkinseed sunfish, along with mountain whitefish and various sucker species. This remarkable variety of species makes Bull Lake unique among Montana waters, as it successfully sustains both native trout populations and introduced warm-water gamefish. Anglers pursue trophy-sized pike and bass during the warmer months while fly fishermen target rising trout in the cooler spring and fall periods, and ice fishing enthusiasts find success during Montana's cold winter season. The lake's recreational opportunities extend beyond fishing to include boating with pontoons, powerboats, jet skis, kayaks, and canoes all welcome on the water, along with swimming at designated areas during the summer months. The nearest significant town is Libby, located just 30 minutes from the lake, where visitors can access supermarkets, restaurants, medical facilities at Cabinet Peaks Medical Center, schools, shops, and other essential services. The closest major airport is Glacier Park International Airport, approximately three hours away, making Bull Lake accessible yet remote enough to provide a true Montana wilderness experience. The surrounding Cabinet Mountains and nearby Kootenai National Forest offer additional outdoor recreation including hiking, camping, wildlife watching with opportunities to see deer, elk, black bears, and numerous bird species, and scenic drives through some of Montana's most spectacular mountain landscapes.
