Cedar Lake in Lake County, Indiana
This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version
Cedar Lake is a 781-acre natural glacial lake formed from meltwaters in Lake County, Indiana, featuring a maximum depth of 16 feet in the middle basin with a median depth of 8.8 feet and approximately six miles of shoreline. As the largest natural lake in Northwest Indiana and the fourth-largest natural lake in the entire state, this spring-fed lake measures 2.1 miles long and 0.9 miles wide at its widest point. The lake is naturally fed by small streams, storm runoff, and underground springs, though the relatively low flushing rate combined with its shallow depth and large size creates moderate water clarity. Historically measuring around 1,200 acres 150 years ago, the lake has evolved over time. This productive fishery supports excellent populations of Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Hybrid Striped Bass (Wipers) stocked annually by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and reaching double-digit weights, Northern Pike, Black Crappie, White Crappie, Bluegill, Yellow Perch, Channel Catfish, and Carp. With a public boat launch at the Chamber of Commerce building on the north shore at Lake Shore Drive and Cline, plus 500 feet of public lakeshore with picnic tables and gazebos at the Town Complex, the lake is perfect for fishing, boating, water skiing, swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and ice fishing in winter months
Located within the charming town of Cedar Lake (population 14,106) just 45 minutes south of Chicago and near the Illinois state line, this glacial lake sits within the Valparaiso Moraine with abundant hills providing evidence of the dramatic glacial geography. The town evolved from a popular 1920s vacation destination for wealthy Chicagoans into a thriving year-round community while maintaining its beach resort atmosphere during summer months with boating, ice cream stands, lakeside dining, and music in the air. Visitors can explore The Museum at Lassen's Resort showcasing the area's rich history as a resort destination, the historic 1878 Old Lake County Courthouse in nearby Crown Point known as the "Marriage Mill" where Rudolph Valentino and Muhammad Ali were married, and the Lake County Historical Society Museum. The surrounding area offers exceptional attractions including Deep River Waterpark with 14 water attractions including wave pools and lazy rivers just minutes away, Lemon Lake County Park with championship disc golf courses and hiking trails, the 17-mile Erie Lackawanna Trail for biking and walking from Crown Point to Hammond, and Crown Point's historic downtown square with unique shops, Crown Brewing, Off Square Brewing, and antique stores in the courthouse basement jail cells. Cedar Lake hosts the annual SummerFest celebration, features excellent schools through Hanover Community School Corporation and Crown Point Community School Corporation, and provides easy access to Chicago's attractions via I-65 while offering small-town charm, active community events, and a tight-knit neighborhood atmosphere where everyone knows each other and supports families in need through fundraisers and supply drives
This beautifully handcrafted laser-cut wooden topographical map of Cedar Lake would make a stunning addition to your Indiana lake home, cottage, or office, celebrating your connection to Northwest Indiana's largest natural lake and Chicago's historic summer playground. The artistic design features a natural wood top layer that elegantly frames the lake's 781-acre glacial formation measuring 2.1 miles long and nearly a mile wide, while the water depths are represented through a gentle gradient flowing from light blue in the shallow 8.8-foot median areas to slightly deeper blue at the 16-foot maximum depth in the middle basin. Every bay, the historic tree stumps on the lake bed from when the area was flooded over a century ago, the public boat launch at the Chamber of Commerce, the Town Complex lakefront, and distinctive features are precisely laser-etched into the multi-layered wood construction, creating a three-dimensional piece of wall art that beautifully captures the glacial heritage and resort town character of this beloved Lake County treasure that served as a summer escape for generations of Chicagoans and continues to provide exceptional fishing and water recreation just minutes from the Windy City

The difference between standard and HD maps is the number of layers. Standard maps have 1 land layer and 7 water layers. " The HD lake maps have 1 land layer and 14 water layers. So twice the detail. The HD Maps are limited to Extra Large, " XX Large, and Gigantic sizes only. On the smaller sizes the depth change of the wood is too extreme and you end up losing detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these actually 3D or just engraved?
These are true 3D layered maps.
- Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
- Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
- HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers
Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.
Where are these made?
Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.
- Design
- Cutting
- Painting
- Assembly
- Frame building
The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.
Do you use real depth data?
Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.
I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.
Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?
Most marketplace sellers:
- Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
- Have no connection to the lakes
- Cannot verify accuracy
- Have long delays if a file is not available
This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.
Because I design everything myself:
- I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
- You get a more accurate map, faster
What is your lead time?
Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.
Tell me about the Cribbage Boards
These are different from the layered maps and are not something you will find elsewhere.
- Made from a solid piece of Maple or Cherry

- Then filled with blue tinted epoxy that is still transparent
You can see:
- Channels
- Humps
- Points
- Structure
Additional features:
- 2 or 3 track options
- Choice of peg colors
- Hidden peg storage with a magnetic dovetail slider
- Rubber feet so it does not slide on the table
It is a functional game board and a detailed lake model in one.
