Clam Lake Area Lakes in Ashland and Sawyer Counties, Wisconsin

This map has 8 layers

The Clam Lake area is a pristine wilderness destination in the heart of the 860,000-acre Chequamegon National Forest, featuring exceptional fishing opportunities across multiple interconnected lakes including Upper Clam Lake, Lower Clam Lake, White Bass Lake, and Day Lake. This remote region offers crystal-clear waters surrounded by untouched boreal forest, with healthy populations of trophy Muskellunge, Walleye, Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, and abundant panfish thriving in these nutrient-rich Canadian Shield waters. The lakes feature diverse habitat including lily pad beds, weed beds, rocky shoals, drop-offs, and deep basins that create ideal conditions for year-round fishing success, plus opportunities for boating, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and wildlife viewing where bald eagles nest and loons call across morning waters. With public boat launches providing convenient access to the chain and minimal fishing pressure due to the area's remote location, these lakes offer anglers an authentic wilderness experience with world-class catches in one of Wisconsin's most beautiful and unspoiled natural settings.

Located adjacent to the tiny unincorporated community of Clam Lake at the intersection of Ashland, Bayfield, and Sawyer Counties, this remote wilderness area sits approximately 30 miles southeast of Ashland and is famous for Wisconsin's reintroduced elk herd, which began with 25 animals in 1995 and has grown to approximately 180 elk roaming the Chequamegon National Forest. Clam Lake is recognized as the premier destination in Wisconsin for elk viewing, with regular sightings of these majestic animals grazing in meadows and crossing forest roads throughout the region. The surrounding area offers world-class outdoor recreation including hundreds of miles of ATV and snowmobile trails with state corridor trails 8 and 25 passing through, the 300-mile CAMBA mountain bike trail system hosting the annual Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival each September, cross-country skiing on the American Birkebeiner trail routes, and access to the nearby massive Chippewa Flowage. Visitors can explore Day Lake Campground with excellent camping facilities, hunt for black bear and ruffed grouse (nearby Park Falls is the Ruffed Grouse Capital of the World), fish blue ribbon trout streams including the Namekagon River just 15 miles west, and enjoy the Clam Lake Junction as a local gathering spot for northwoods hospitality, dining, and fishing stories around the fire.

This magnificent handcrafted laser-cut wooden topographical map of the Clam Lake area lakes would create a breathtaking centerpiece in your northwoods lodge, hunting camp, or home, celebrating your connection to this pristine Chequamegon National Forest wilderness region. The artistic design features a natural wood top layer that beautifully showcases the interconnected chain of Upper Clam, Lower Clam, White Bass, Day, and surrounding lakes with their intricate shorelines winding through untouched boreal forest where elk roam freely. The water depths are represented through a captivating gradient flowing from light blue in the shallow vegetated bays to rich deep blue in the deeper basins, while every rocky point, island, bay, prime fishing structure, and connection between the lakes is precisely laser-etched into the multi-layered wood construction. This three-dimensional masterpiece beautifully captures the wild character, exceptional musky fishing heritage, and unique elk habitat of this beloved Wisconsin wilderness destination surrounded by 860,000 acres of pristine national forest.
