Lake Elwell, also known as Tiber Reservoir, is a significant body of water in north-central Montana, stretching across Liberty and Toole Counties. Created by the damming of the Marias River, this large reservoir spans 18,600 acres and boasts an extensive shoreline of 180 miles. Anglers are drawn to Lake Elwell for its excellent year-round fishing opportunities, with popular species including walleye, northern pike, sauger, and various trout. The expansive waters are also ideal for boating, and several well-maintained boat ramps provide easy access. The surrounding landscape features unique windblown sandstone formations and offers opportunities for camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing.

The area around Lake Elwell, managed by the Bureau of Reclamation, provides diverse recreational experiences. Visitors can explore numerous campgrounds and picnic areas situated along the shoreline. The lake's substantial depth, reaching up to 211 feet, supports a varied aquatic ecosystem. Beyond water-based activities, the region offers hunting for mule and whitetail deer, antelope, and upland game birds. Birdwatching is also popular, particularly along the Marias River below the dam. With its blend of excellent fishing, boating, and scenic beauty, Lake Elwell is a valuable recreational destination in Montana.
