This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version
Gunn Lake is a pristine 382-acre natural lake in Itasca County featuring crystal-clear water reaching a maximum depth of 55 feet with an average depth of 17 feet, approximately six miles of lightly developed shoreline, and 142 littoral acres creating excellent shallow-water fish habitat. Named for a lumberman who worked in the region during Itasca County's legendary logging era, the lake consists of a series of connected basins within the Big Fork River Watershed, receiving inlets from Charlie Lake and Highland Lake while the outlet flows to Fox Lake and eventually the Rice River. Exceptional water clarity averaging 12.3 feet from Secchi disk readings ranging from 9 to 17 feet creates ideal conditions for sight fishing and swimming. This productive fishery is primarily managed for Northern Pike as the DNR's 2017 survey showed a gill net catch rate of 3.6 fish per net with 51 percent exceeding 21 inches and 19 percent exceeding 28 inches, averaging 22.4 inches and ranging up to 34.1 inches, while secondary species include abundant Largemouth Bass, quality Black Crappie, Bluegill, Yellow Perch, Pumpkinseed, Rock Bass, plus three species of Bullhead, Cisco (Tullibee), Common Shiner, Golden Shiner, Hybrid Sunfish, and White Sucker creating a diverse ecosystem. With an unimproved state-owned public access on the west-central shore and calm waters perfect for paddling, the lake is ideal for fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and ice fishing year-round, with bald eagles nesting in surrounding trees and abundant wildlife throughout the Chippewa National Forest
Located approximately seven miles east of the small community of Marcell (population 468), the hub of the Edge of the Wilderness National Scenic Byway in northern Itasca County, Gunn Lake sits within a township of 56 square miles containing all or part of 48 pristine lakes. Marcell, the birthplace of ASV all-terrain vehicle manufacturer, features the Edge of the Wilderness Discovery Center providing visitor services and information about the 47-mile scenic byway that meanders north from Grand Rapids to Effie through state and national forest, winding around 36 lakes where aspen, birch, pine, and maple trees explode with color each fall. The surrounding Chippewa National Forest covers 1.6 million acres and is home to the largest breeding population of bald eagles in the continental United States with over 150 nesting pairs, plus abundant moose, black bears, white-tailed deer, wolves, and hundreds of bird species. Grand Rapids, Itasca County's seat just 28 miles south, features the famous Judy Garland Museum celebrating the Wizard of Oz star's birthplace, the Forest History Center recreating a 1900s logging camp with exhibits and a 100-foot fire tower, the Itasca County Historical Society Museum with over 50,000 artifacts, the MacRostie Art Center, and the Myles Reif Performing Arts Center. Visitors can explore the 135-mile Mesabi Trail paved bike path connecting Grand Rapids to Ely through the Iron Range, play championship golf at Pokegama or Eagle Ridge courses, enjoy hundreds of miles of snowmobile and ATV trails, fish over 1,000 lakes in the county, and experience the Great River Road National Scenic Byway following the Mississippi River from its headwaters at Lake Itasca through ten states to the Gulf of Mexico
This beautifully handcrafted laser-cut wooden topographical map of Gunn Lake would make a stunning addition to your northwoods cabin, Marcell-area retreat, or home, celebrating your connection to this pristine lake named for the lumbermen who shaped Itasca County's heritage. The artistic design features a natural wood top layer that perfectly frames the lake's series of connected basins spanning 382 acres with approximately six miles of lightly developed shoreline, the inlets from Charlie and Highland Lakes, and the outlet flowing to Fox Lake and the Rice River, while the water depths are represented through a captivating gradient flowing from light blue in the 17-foot average areas to rich deeper blue at the impressive 55-foot maximum depth. Every bay, the unimproved state-owned public access on the west-central shore, prime northern pike fishing zones where fish average 22.4 inches with many exceeding 28 inches, and the exceptional 12.3-foot water clarity maintained by the lake's pristine wilderness setting are precisely laser-etched into the multi-layered wood construction. This three-dimensional piece of wall art beautifully captures the exceptional clarity, trophy northern pike heritage, and wilderness character of this beloved Itasca County treasure seven miles from Marcell on the Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway surrounded by the Chippewa National Forest's bald eagles and endless outdoor recreation opportunities in Minnesota's legendary northwoods

The HD Maps are limited to Extra Large, " XX Large, and Gigantic sizes only. On the smaller sizes the depth change of the wood is too extreme and you end up losing detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these actually 3D or just engraved?
These are true 3D layered maps.
- Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
- Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
- HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers
Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.
Where are these made?
Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.
- Design
- Cutting
- Painting
- Assembly
- Frame building
The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.
Do you use real depth data?
Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.
I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.
Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?
Most marketplace sellers:
- Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
- Have no connection to the lakes
- Cannot verify accuracy
- Have long delays if a file is not available
This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.
Because I design everything myself:
- I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
- You get a more accurate map, faster
What is your lead time?
Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.
