Island Lake is a 60-acre shallow eutrophic lake located in the heart of Shoreview, Ramsey County, featuring a maximum depth of 12 feet with an average depth of 5 feet and approximately three miles of shoreline. Classified as Lake Class 42, the lake consists of two basins bisected by Interstate 694, with the north basin (20 acres) developed with single-family homes while Island Lake County Park owns most of the shoreline of the south basin (40 acres) providing public recreation access. The lake is prone to winterkill due to its shallow depth, but a winter aeration system has been operated since 1975 to maintain oxygen levels and support fish populations through harsh Minnesota winters. This productive warm-water fishery, managed through annual Channel Catfish stocking programs with successful population establishment, supports excellent populations of Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Walleye, Black Crappie, White Crappie, Bluegill, Yellow Perch, Pumpkinseed, plus three species of Bullhead and Carp creating diverse fishing opportunities. With a fishing pier installed in 1990 near the boat launch, shoreline fishing around the channel underneath I-694, and the county park's accessible facilities, the lake is perfect for family fishing, small boat recreation, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and year-round ice fishing, though anglers should be aware that Eurasian watermilfoil is present and can be extremely abundant during low water years, sometimes affecting boating and shore fishing access
Located at 3611 North Victoria Street in the vibrant city of Shoreview (population 26,840) just ten miles north of both downtown Saint Paul and Minneapolis in Ramsey County, Island Lake sits within the picturesque Twin Cities Gateway region featuring eleven pristine lakes and over 50 miles of trails and sidewalks throughout this family-friendly community. Island Lake County Park, open 5 AM to 11 PM daily, offers exceptional recreation facilities including parking for 270 cars and five boat trailers (though the small boat launch has limited parking creating challenges), three picnic shelters perfect for group gatherings with reservation options, a large playground near Shelter #1, play fields with backstops, fishing pier for accessible angling, boat launch, and shoreline fishing areas providing convenient public access to this urban oasis. The surrounding area features the massive 90,000-square-foot Shoreview Community Center with the Tropics Indoor Water Park offering year-round swimming, waterslides, and family fun, Tropical Adventure Indoor Playground, state-of-the-art fitness facilities, gymnasium, banquet and meeting rooms, plus Island Lake Golf Course providing championship golfing just minutes from the lake. Visitors can enjoy the annual Slice of Shoreview Days festival each late July with art fairs, parades, and family activities, explore 14 city parks connected by trails perfect for biking and walking, and access nearby Twin Cities attractions including the Saint Paul Winter Carnival (one of America's oldest and largest winter festivals), the Minnesota State Capitol, Summit Avenue's Victorian mansions, the Science Museum of Minnesota, Mall of America, Minneapolis Chain of Lakes, Target Field and U.S. Bank Stadium for professional sports, plus exceptional dining and shopping throughout the vibrant Twin Cities metropolitan area ranked among America's most livable cities with nationally ranked park systems. The area provides easy access via I-694 and Highway 96, Metro Transit bus and light rail connections, plus proximity to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport just 20 minutes south, making Island Lake the perfect urban fishing and recreation destination where Twin Cities convenience meets small-town park atmosphere and exceptional outdoor amenities
This charming handcrafted laser-cut wooden topographical map of Island Lake would make a delightful addition to your Shoreview home, Twin Cities area office, or cabin, celebrating your connection to this 60-acre urban oasis providing exceptional family recreation just ten miles from downtown Saint Paul and Minneapolis. The artistic design features a natural wood top layer that perfectly frames the lake's two-basin shape bisected by Interstate 694, with the developed north basin and the public Island Lake County Park facilities dominating the south basin shoreline, while the shallow water depths are represented through a gentle gradient in the 5-foot average areas to slightly deeper blue at the 12-foot maximum depth. Every bay, the fishing pier installed in 1990, the boat launch with five trailer parking spaces, the channel underneath I-694 where shore anglers congregate, the three picnic shelters, playground, and the winter aeration system location maintaining oxygen since 1975 are precisely laser-etched into the multi-layered wood construction, creating a three-dimensional piece of wall art that beautifully captures the urban park character, successful Channel Catfish stocking heritage, and family-friendly recreation atmosphere of this beloved Ramsey County treasure where Shoreview residents enjoy year-round fishing, boating, and lakeside gatherings in the heart of the Twin Cities Gateway ranked among America's best park systems

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these actually 3D or just engraved?
These are true 3D layered maps.
- Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
- Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
- HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers
Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.
Where are these made?
Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.
- Design
- Cutting
- Painting
- Assembly
- Frame building
The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.
Do you use real depth data?
Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.
I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.
Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?
Most marketplace sellers:
- Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
- Have no connection to the lakes
- Cannot verify accuracy
- Have long delays if a file is not available
This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.
Because I design everything myself:
- I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
- You get a more accurate map, faster
What is your lead time?
Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.
Tell me about the Cribbage Boards
These are different from the layered maps and are not something you will find elsewhere.
- Made from a solid piece of Maple or Cherry
- The lake is engraved as if drained
- Then filled with blue tinted epoxy that is still transparent
You can see:
- Channels
- Humps
- Points
- Structure
Additional features:
- 2 or 3 track options
- Choice of peg colors
- Hidden peg storage with a magnetic dovetail slider
- Rubber feet so it does not slide on the table
It is a functional game board and a detailed lake model in one.
