This map has 8 layers
Lake Kinnelon is a 19-acre private lake nestled within the upscale gated community of Smoke Rise in the borough of Kinnelon, Morris County, New Jersey, featuring an average depth of 6 feet with a maximum depth of 14 feet in Talbot Cove and approximately one mile of scenic shoreline. Originally a natural pond, the lake was enlarged in 1886 when Francis S. Kinney, a 19th-century tobacco industry pioneer who purchased 5,000 acres in the 1880s, constructed a dam in Talbot Cove that raised the water level by three feet, and numerous underground springs continue to feed the lake today. The lake's bottom features historic tree stumps from when all trees in the flooded area were cut down before damming but never removed, creating unique underwater structure. This private fishery is stocked through revenues generated from Smoke Rise fishing licenses and supports healthy populations of Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Rock Bass, Walleye, Yellow Perch, Chain Pickerel, Black Crappie, Channel Catfish, Bullhead Catfish, and various Sunfish species, along with a healthy population of turtles and beavers. The lake is ideal for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, sailing, and swimming within the exclusive Smoke Rise community
Located within the 3,500-acre Smoke Rise gated community in Kinnelon Borough, one of New Jersey's highest-income communities listed by Forbes as one of America's Most Expensive ZIP Codes, Lake Kinnelon sits approximately 35 miles northwest of New York City making it an exceptional escape from the metropolitan area. The lake is home to the historic St. Hubert's Chapel, a stunning 8th-century style stone chapel built on an island in 1886 by Francis Kinney and later enhanced by legendary stained glass artist Louis Comfort Tiffany with a Celtic cross window and signed mosaic floor, offering occasional tours through the Smoke Rise Club. Kitty Ann Mountain, the highest point in Kinnelon at 1,140 feet elevation, offers panoramic views of northern New Jersey and the distant New York City skyline from the Smoke Rise Tower. Nearby Ringwood State Park, just 10 minutes away, features the National Historic Landmark Ringwood Manor with tours of the 51-room Victorian mansion, the stunning New Jersey Botanical Garden at Skylands with its 96-acre botanical showplace and English Jacobean Skylands Manor, 74-acre spring-fed Shepherd Lake for swimming and fishing, and over 20 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding. The surrounding Morris County area offers Splitrock Reservoir with 625 acres of wilderness, the historic Pequannock River Watershed, charming downtown shopping in nearby Butler and Bloomingdale, and easy access to the vibrant dining and entertainment scene of Morristown just 20 minutes south
This exquisite handcrafted laser-cut wooden topographical map of Lake Kinnelon would make a stunning conversation piece in your Smoke Rise home, study, or office, celebrating your connection to this historic private lake at the heart of one of New Jersey's most prestigious communities. The artistic design features a natural wood top layer that beautifully frames the intimate 19-acre lake with its distinctive island home to the Louis Comfort Tiffany-enhanced St. Hubert's Chapel, while the water depths are represented through an elegant gradient flowing from light blue in the shallow 6-foot average areas to deeper blue at the 14-foot maximum depth in Talbot Cove. Every historic tree stump bed, the dam location, underground spring areas, and the chapel island are precisely laser-etched into the multi-layered wood construction, creating a refined three-dimensional piece of wall art that beautifully captures the historic elegance and private character of this legendary New Jersey lake dating back to the Gilded Age of Francis S. Kinney's estate

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these actually 3D or just engraved?
These are true 3D layered maps.
- Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
- Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
- HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers
Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.
Where are these made?
Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.
- Design
- Cutting
- Painting
- Assembly
- Frame building
The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.
Do you use real depth data?
Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.
I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.
Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?
Most marketplace sellers:
- Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
- Have no connection to the lakes
- Cannot verify accuracy
- Have long delays if a file is not available
This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.
Because I design everything myself:
- I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
- You get a more accurate map, faster
What is your lead time?
Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.
Tell me about the Cribbage Boards
These are different from the layered maps and are not something you will find elsewhere.
- Made from a solid piece of Maple or Cherry
- The lake is engraved as if drained
- Then filled with blue tinted epoxy that is still transparent
You can see:
- Channels
- Humps
- Points
- Structure
Additional features:
- 2 or 3 track options
- Choice of peg colors
- Hidden peg storage with a magnetic dovetail slider
- Rubber feet so it does not slide on the table
It is a functional game board and a detailed lake model in one.
