Lake Lanier, a sprawling 38,000-acre reservoir with 692 miles of shoreline, is nestled in the foothills of the Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains, touching Dawson, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Hall, and Lumpkin Counties. Created by the Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee and Chestatee Rivers, it is a premier recreational destination in the Southeast. The lake is renowned for its excellent fishing, particularly for spotted bass, largemouth bass, and striped bass. Numerous boat ramps and marinas provide access for anglers and recreational boaters alike.

Lake Lanier offers a vast array of activities, including boating, swimming at its many beaches, waterskiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Margaritaville at Lanier Islands is a popular hub for water park fun and lakeside entertainment. The surrounding area boasts state parks like Don Carter State Park, offering hiking trails and camping. During the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Lake Lanier hosted the rowing, canoeing, and kayaking events, further cementing its status as a significant recreational venue.
