Lower Clam Lake in Sawyer County, Wisconsin
This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version
Lower Clam Lake is a 214-acre pristine lake nestled in the heart of the 860,000-acre Chequamegon National Forest in northeastern Sawyer County, featuring a maximum depth of 30 feet and approximately three miles of scenic shoreline with roughly 75 percent remaining undeveloped and natural. The lake's bottom composition of 72 percent sand, 15 percent rock, 10 percent muck, and 3 percent gravel creates diverse habitat structure with numerous bays perfect for targeting fish. This productive fishery supports healthy populations of Musky, Walleye, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, and various panfish species, with anglers finding success along the 5-to-10-foot drop lines near shore, particularly at the far north and south ends of the lake for trophy muskies and pike. The lake features an irregular shape with multiple productive bays and has special boating regulations allowing water sports between 11 AM and 3 PM with a 10 mph speed limit enforced during other hours. Public boat launch access is conveniently located, making the lake ideal for fishing, boating, kayaking, swimming, and year-round recreation including excellent ice fishing opportunities
Located adjacent to the tiny unincorporated community of Clam Lake in the town of Gordon, Ashland County (though the lake itself is in Sawyer County), Lower Clam Lake sits approximately 30 miles southeast of Ashland and near the headwaters of the Chippewa Flowage. The surrounding area is famous for Wisconsin's reintroduced elk herd, which began with 25 animals in 1995 and has grown to approximately 180 elk roaming the Chequamegon National Forest, making Clam Lake the premier destination in Wisconsin for elk viewing. The area offers world-class outdoor recreation including hundreds of miles of ATV and snowmobile trails accessible directly from the lake, cross-country skiing on the American Birkebeiner trail system, mountain biking through pristine national forest, and exceptional hunting opportunities for black bear, ruffed grouse, and white-tailed deer. Nearby attractions include Day Lake just north of town (another excellent musky destination), the Chippewa Flowage's expansive waters, multiple waterfalls throughout the region, and access to two wild and scenic rivers - the Pine and Popple Rivers. The Clam Lake Junction serves as a local gathering spot, while Day Lake Campground provides excellent camping facilities for visitors exploring this remote wilderness area
This beautifully handcrafted laser-cut wooden topographical map of Lower Clam Lake would make a stunning addition to your northwoods cabin, hunting camp, or home, celebrating your connection to this pristine Chequamegon National Forest gem. The artistic design features a natural wood top layer of maple or birch that perfectly frames the lake's irregular shape with multiple bays and three miles of mostly undeveloped shoreline, while the water depths are represented through a captivating gradient flowing from light blue in the shallow sandy areas to rich deep blue at the 30-foot maximum depth. Every bay, depth contour, underwater structure, and distinctive feature is precisely laser-etched into the multi-layered wood construction, creating a three-dimensional piece of wall art that beautifully captures the wild character and exceptional musky fishing heritage of this remote Wisconsin lake surrounded by 860,000 acres of pristine national forest and roaming elk

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these actually 3D or just engraved?
These are true 3D layered maps.
- Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
- Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
- HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers
Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.
Where are these made?
Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.
- Design
- Cutting
- Painting
- Assembly
- Frame building
The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.
Do you use real depth data?
Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.
I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.
Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?
Most marketplace sellers:
- Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
- Have no connection to the lakes
- Cannot verify accuracy
- Have long delays if a file is not available
This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.
Because I design everything myself:
- I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
- You get a more accurate map, faster
What is your lead time?
Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.
Tell me about the Cribbage Boards
These are different from the layered maps and are not something you will find elsewhere.
- Made from a solid piece of Maple or Cherry
- The lake is engraved as if drained
- Then filled with blue tinted epoxy that is still transparent
You can see:
- Channels
- Humps
- Points
- Structure
Additional features:
- 2 or 3 track options
- Choice of peg colors
- Hidden peg storage with a magnetic dovetail slider
- Rubber feet so it does not slide on the table
It is a functional game board and a detailed lake model in one.
