Lake Medora in Keweenaw County, Michigan

This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version

Lake Medora is a picturesque 695-acre lake situated along US Highway 41 in Keweenaw County, Michigan, just 4.5 miles south of Copper Harbor at the northernmost tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. With a maximum depth of 30 feet and an average depth of 15 feet, the lake features predominantly sandy bottom composition throughout, with numerous small scenic islands scattered across its surface creating a distinctly Canadian-like appearance. The lake supports healthy fish populations including walleye, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, lake whitefish, and brook trout, offering excellent angling opportunities in a serene wilderness setting. A public boat launch provides access for small craft, kayaks, and canoes, making it ideal for paddling adventures exploring the lake's many protected coves, islands, and inlets where wildlife abounds including loons calling across morning waters, bald eagles soaring overhead, and the occasional moose feeding along shorelines surrounded by dense boreal forests of birch, pine, and spruce.

Located at the end of US Highway 41, as far from an interstate as possible in the lower 48 states, Lake Medora provides access to Copper Harbor, a charming village of about 100 year-round residents that swells in summer with outdoor enthusiasts drawn to world-class attractions and natural wonders. Just minutes away, Fort Wilkins Historic State Park features a meticulously restored 1844 military outpost with 19 original buildings where costumed youth interpreters bring mid-19th century frontier life to life, plus the historic Copper Harbor Lighthouse dating to 1866 and the 227-acre Lake Fanny Hooe. The legendary Brockway Mountain Drive climbs nearly 1,300 feet above sea level offering breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Superior stretching to the horizon, inland lakes below, and serves as a prime hawk migration viewing spot each spring. The area boasts over 37 miles of premier mountain biking trails as an IMBA Silver Level Ride Center with gnarly technical singletrack through forests and along Lake Superior shores, the 570-acre Estivant Pines Sanctuary protecting Michigan's last old-growth white pine stand with trees over 300 years old, Isle Royale National Park ferry service departing daily from Copper Harbor for wilderness adventures, the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge International Dark Sky Park offering spectacular Northern Lights viewing, Delaware Mine tours descending 110 feet underground to see pure copper veins exposed in mine walls, spectacular waterfalls including nearby Manganese Falls, the Montreal River for additional fishing opportunities, and mom-and-pop shops, restaurants, brewpubs, and the famous Jampot bakery run by monks producing legendary thimbleberry jam and baked goods.

This stunning laser-cut wooden map of Lake Medora would make an exceptional addition to your Upper Peninsula cabin, northwoods retreat, or home, capturing the pristine beauty and remote wilderness character of Michigan's far northern frontier. The handcrafted design features a natural wood top layer that elegantly showcases the lake's distinctive shoreline with its numerous picturesque islands creating protected paddling passages, scenic mountain views rising beyond the shores, and the surrounding Keweenaw wilderness landscape of ancient forests and rocky ridges. The water depth is beautifully illustrated through a graduated light blue to dark blue gradient that captures the gentle depth variations from shallow sandy areas perfect for swimming to the 30-foot maximum depth, creating a stunning three-dimensional representation of this Canadian-like gem. Whether commemorating successful fishing trips for trophy smallmouth bass and walleye, peaceful sunset paddles exploring hidden coves among the islands, family adventures discovering the rich copper mining heritage and spectacular Lake Superior shorelines, or simply celebrating your connection to one of Michigan's most remote and unspoiled wilderness destinations, this museum-quality piece serves as both sophisticated wall art and a cherished reminder of unforgettable moments spent in the magnificent Keweenaw Peninsula where the road ends and adventure begins.
