Mitawan Lake in Lake County, Minnesota

This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version

Mitawan Lake is a pristine 191-acre natural lake located within the Superior National Forest in northeastern Minnesota's Lake County, featuring a maximum depth of 24 feet and five miles of scenic shoreline in Stony River Township. This remote wilderness lake has no developed designated public access and can only be reached by canoe or small boat via a short portage from Mitawan Lake Road into the lake's outlet, creating an exclusive and unspoiled fishing experience. The lake's exceptional water quality supports well-above-average Walleye populations with fish averaging just under two pounds and specimens up to 5.8 pounds documented in surveys, with approximately 41 percent of fish ranging between 18 and 21 inches. Maintained through natural reproduction since the last stocking in 1994, the Walleye fishery is complemented by Northern Pike averaging 2.9 pounds with trophy fish up to 32.3 inches and 7.3 pounds, quality Smallmouth Bass reaching 17.2 inches and 3.0 pounds, Bluegill up to 9.8 inches with numerous specimens over 8 inches, plus Largemouth Bass, Yellow Perch up to 9 inches, Rock Bass, Burbot, and White Sucker. With minimal fishing pressure due to difficult access and no motorized boats or jet skis allowed, the lake is perfect for peaceful canoeing, kayaking, fly fishing, and wilderness camping where anglers enjoy solitude in pristine waters surrounded by untouched boreal forest

Located in remote Lake County approximately one hour north of Ely, known as the Gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Mitawan Lake sits deep within the 3.9-million-acre Superior National Forest where outdoor recreation opportunities are endless. The surrounding area provides access to Finland State Forest with six miles of ATV and dirt bike trails plus two miles of hiking trails for rustic wilderness experiences, and nearby Tettegouche State Park featuring the stunning 60-foot High Falls (Minnesota's highest waterfall on the shore of a lake), 23 miles of hiking trails through rugged terrain, and spectacular Lake Superior overlooks. Isabella, the small unincorporated community nearest to Mitawan Lake, offers basic supplies and serves as a jumping-off point for exploring the vast wilderness. Ely features exceptional attractions including the International Wolf Center with live wolf exhibits teaching about these magnificent creatures and their relationship to the land, the North American Bear Center showcasing resident black bears, the Dorothy Molter Museum celebrating the legendary "Root Beer Lady" who lived in the BWCA for over 50 years, and downtown shopping for outdoor gear at Piragis Northwoods Company Outfitters. Visitors can paddle the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness with over one million acres and 1,200 miles of canoe routes, fish Lake Vermilion with 365 islands, hike the Bass Lake Loop to Dry Falls, enjoy dog sledding and snowmobiling in winter, and experience the pristine wilderness that draws adventurers from around the world to Minnesota's North Shore region

This beautifully handcrafted laser-cut wooden topographical map of Mitawan Lake would make a stunning addition to your wilderness cabin, northwoods retreat, or home, celebrating your connection to this remote Superior National Forest gem accessible only by portage. The artistic design features a natural wood top layer that perfectly frames the lake's 191-acre shape and five miles of shoreline surrounded by pristine boreal forest, while the water depths are represented through a gentle gradient flowing from light blue in the shallower areas to deeper blue at the 24-foot maximum depth. Every bay, the portage access point from Mitawan Lake Road, depth contour, and distinctive feature is precisely laser-etched into the multi-layered wood construction, creating a three-dimensional piece of wall art that beautifully captures the remote wilderness character and exceptional walleye fishing heritage of this beloved Lake County treasure where natural reproduction maintains healthy fish populations and minimal human impact preserves the lake's pristine condition for future generations

The difference between standard and HD maps is the number of layers. Standard maps have 1 land layer and 7 water layers. " The HD lake maps have 1 land layer and 14 water layers. So twice the detail. The HD Maps are limited to Extra Large, " XX Large, and Gigantic sizes only. On the smaller sizes the depth change of the wood is too extreme and you end up losing detail.

About our Maps

Every map is designed and built in Minnesota. Nothing is outsourced and nothing is imported.

  • Designed in-house. All art files are created by me, not purchased or reused
  • True layered 3D construction. Not engraved or printed
  • More layers, more detail. Most competitors use 3 to 7 layers. These use 8 or 15 layers
  • Original blue depth gradient. Light to dark blue shows water depth clearly
  • Handmade hardwood frames. Built from locally sourced rough sawn lumber, not pre-made frames

These are built to be the most accurate and most detailed 3D lake maps available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these actually 3D or just engraved?

These are true 3D layered maps.

  • Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
  • Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
  • HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers

Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.

Where are these made?

Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.

  • Design
  • Cutting
  • Painting
  • Assembly
  • Frame building

The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.

Do you use real depth data?

Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.

I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.

Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?

Most marketplace sellers:

  • Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
  • Have no connection to the lakes
  • Cannot verify accuracy
  • Have long delays if a file is not available

This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.

Because I design everything myself:

  • I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
  • You get a more accurate map, faster

What is your lead time?

Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.

Tell me about the Cribbage Boards

These are different from the layered maps and are not something you will find elsewhere.

  • Made from a solid piece of Maple or Cherry
  • The lake is engraved as if drained
  • Then filled with blue tinted epoxy that is still transparent

You can see:

  • Channels
  • Humps
  • Points
  • Structure

Additional features:

  • 2 or 3 track options
  • Choice of peg colors
  • Hidden peg storage with a magnetic dovetail slider
  • Rubber feet so it does not slide on the table

It is a functional game board and a detailed lake model in one.
