This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version
Lac Saint-Jean, known as Piekuakami ("flat lake") in the Innu language, is a massive 260,482-acre lake in south-central Quebec's Laurentian Highlands, measuring 45 kilometers long and 34 kilometers wide—approximately twice the size of Montreal Island—making it Quebec's largest inhabited lake and often described as an inland sea. Located 206 kilometers north of the Saint Lawrence River into which it drains via the spectacular Saguenay Fjord, the lake reaches a maximum depth of 207 feet with 130 miles of shoreline featuring 42 kilometers of pristine sandy beaches and charming picturesque villages. Fed by dozens of major rivers including the Ashuapmushuan, Mistassini, Péribonka, Des Aulnaies, Métabetchouane, and Ouiatchouane, the lake supports exceptional fishing for Ouananiche (landlocked Atlantic salmon meaning "the little lost one"), Walleye, Northern Pike, and various sportfish that draw thousands of anglers annually. Summer water temperatures approaching 25°C (77°F) create ideal swimming conditions, while the famous Traversée Internationale du Lac-Saint-Jean, held annually since 1955, sees world-class swimmers compete in a 32-kilometer open-water marathon between Péribonka and Roberval, one of ten FINA Grand Prix competitions worldwide, celebrated with a 10,000-person street feast featuring tourtière meat pies in downtown Roberval
Surrounded by vibrant communities including Alma, Dolbeau-Mistassini, Roberval, Normandin, and Saint-Félicien, Lac Saint-Jean sits at the heart of the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region covering 107,952 square kilometers—three times the size of Belgium—and steeped in rich history dating to 1647 when Jesuit missionary Father Jean De Quen became the first European to reach its shores. The locals proudly call themselves "Bleuets" after the wild blueberries emblematic of the region, with over 15,000 hectares of commercial blueberry farms producing the famous small fruit that flourished after the devastating 1870 fire. The legendary 256-kilometer Véloroute des Bleuets cycling route circles the entire lake through 15 communities on a mix of flat paths and gentle hills, while Route 169 creates the iconic Tour du Lac Saint-Jean road trip visiting world-class attractions including the Village historique de Val-Jalbert (a preserved 1920s pulp mill village with aerial tramway), Zoo sauvage de Saint-Félicien showcasing 86 exotic and native species in natural habitats, Parc national de la Pointe-Taillon with 14 kilometers of beach and peninsula wilderness, Musée Louis-Hémon commemorating the author of Maria Chapdelaine (the classic 1914 novel translated into 20 languages), and L'Odyssée des Bâtisseurs in Alma with its 360-degree immersive projection tower. The region features 3,800 kilometers of snowmobile trails, exceptional microbreweries and distilleries serving boreal flavors, blueberry picking experiences in August, cultural encounters with the Ilnu First Nation at Mashteuiatsh, and gourmet dining featuring local specialties including chocolate-covered blueberries, Perron cheddar cheese, and traditional Lac-Saint-Jean tourtière
This magnificent handcrafted laser-cut wooden topographical map of Lac Saint-Jean would create a breathtaking statement piece in your Quebec cottage, chalet, or home, celebrating your connection to this legendary inland sea known as Piekuakami. The artistic design features a natural wood top layer that beautifully showcases the lake's massive 45-by-34-kilometer expanse appearing like a veritable inland sea, with 130 miles of intricate shoreline dotted with charming villages, 42 kilometers of golden sandy beaches, and the mouths of dozens of major rivers including the Péribonka, Mistassini, and Ashuapmushuan flowing into the lake. The water depths are represented through a captivating gradient flowing from light blue in the characteristically shallow areas that give the lake its Innu name to rich deeper blue at the 207-foot maximum depth, while every bay, beach, river delta, island, and distinctive feature along the famous Véloroute des Bleuets cycling route is precisely laser-etched into the multi-layered wood construction. This three-dimensional masterpiece beautifully captures the immense scale, cultural richness, and natural splendor of Quebec's largest inhabited lake, the blueberry capital and home of the Ouananiche, draining into the spectacular Saguenay Fjord

HD Gigantic 30"x45" - 15 Layers
The difference between standard and HD maps is the number of layers. Standard maps have 1 land layer and 7 water layers. " The HD lake maps have 1 land layer and 14 water layers. So twice the detail. The HD Maps are limited to Extra Large, " XX Large, and Gigantic sizes only. On the smaller sizes the depth change of the wood is too extreme and you end up losing detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these actually 3D or just engraved?
These are true 3D layered maps.
- Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
- Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
- HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers
Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.
Where are these made?
Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.
- Design
- Cutting
- Painting
- Assembly
- Frame building
The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.
Do you use real depth data?
Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.
I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.
Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?
Most marketplace sellers:
- Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
- Have no connection to the lakes
- Cannot verify accuracy
- Have long delays if a file is not available
This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.
Because I design everything myself:
- I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
- You get a more accurate map, faster
What is your lead time?
Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.
