Lake Sammamish in King County, Washington

This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version

Lake Sammamish is a breathtaking 4,853-acre freshwater lake stretching seven miles long and 1.5 miles wide just eight miles east of Seattle in King County, featuring crystal-clear water plunging to a maximum depth of 105 feet with an average depth of 29 feet and 11 miles of scenic shoreline. Fed primarily by Issaquah Creek which furnishes over 70 percent of the lake's inflow, this pristine lake drains north to Lake Washington via the Sammamish River connecting Redmond to Seattle, named after the native people who once lived along its entire length. Recognized as one of the cleanest lakes in the entire country with exceptional water clarity for swimming and scuba diving where you can see clearly to the bottom even at 15-plus feet, the lake supports diverse fish populations including Yellow Perch, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Coastal Cutthroat Trout with fishing best in spring and fall, Chinook, Coho, and Sockeye Salmon, the genetically distinct native Kokanee salmon that King County and partner agencies are working to protect and restore, Steelhead Trout, Black Crappie, Pumpkinseed Sunfish caught year-round peaking during June spawning, and White Perch creating exceptional fishing opportunities. The lake features Marymoor Park at the north end, Lake Sammamish State Park with nine public boat launches at the south end accessed through a separate entrance with parking and restrooms, Idylwood Park on the west shore in Redmond, the East Lake Sammamish Trail running 11 miles along the former Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad corridor, and numerous housing developments with small private parks providing resident lake access. With public slalom course for waterskiing at the far north end, plus opportunities for rowing, wakeboarding, wakesurfing, tubing, jet skiing, kayaking, paddleboarding with rentals from Lake Sammamish Paddle Co., and fishing from shore or boat year-round, the lake offers world-class water recreation just minutes from downtown Seattle

Located adjacent to the rapidly growing communities of Redmond to the north, Sammamish and Bellevue to the west, and Issaquah to the south in the most rapidly growing suburban district in the Greater Seattle Metropolitan Area, Lake Sammamish sits within a 98-square-mile watershed encompassing some of Washington's most vibrant Eastside communities. The 531-acre Lake Sammamish State Park, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, offers two swimming beaches at Sunset Beach and Tibbetts Beach with volleyball courts, soccer fields, picnic shelters including the unique hexagonal Rotunda Shelter with central fireplace, an all-access playground with rubber surfacing and zip line, hiking and biking trails, camping at Group Camp, salmon-bearing Issaquah Creek flowing through the park, and a great blue heron rookery providing exceptional birdwatching with over 100 bird species recorded. The surrounding communities offer exceptional attractions including Redmond's 640-acre Marymoor Park crowned as King County's premier park with off-leash dog areas, velodrome, climbing walls, RC flying field, and concerts, Microsoft's headquarters, Nintendo of America, Issaquah's historic Gilman Village with boutique shopping, the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery where thousands witness salmon returning from the sea each fall, Cougar Mountain Zoo focusing on endangered species, Village Theatre producing Broadway-quality performances in the state-designated Creative Arts District, Tiger Mountain and Cougar Mountain hiking in the Issaquah Alps, Bellevue's downtown skyline with high-end shopping at Bellevue Square and The Shops at the Bravern, the Bellevue Botanical Garden, and Woodinville Wine Country just north featuring over 100 wineries and tasting rooms. The area provides year-round recreation with easy access via Highway 520 and I-90 from Seattle, new Sound Transit light rail stations connecting Eastside communities, exceptional dining throughout Redmond, Issaquah, and Bellevue, plus the stunning natural beauty of the Cascade Mountains rising dramatically to the east where outdoor adventure meets urban sophistication in the Pacific Northwest's most dynamic region

This magnificent handcrafted laser-cut wooden topographical map of Lake Sammamish would create a stunning centerpiece in your Seattle-area home, Eastside lake cottage, or office, celebrating your connection to King County's second-largest lake and one of America's cleanest freshwater bodies just eight miles from downtown Seattle. The artistic design features a natural wood top layer that beautifully showcases the lake's seven-mile length with 11 miles of shoreline from Issaquah in the south to Redmond in the north, the major Issaquah Creek inlet furnishing 70 percent of inflow, Tibbetts Creek and Pine Lake Creek tributaries, the Sammamish River outlet flowing to Lake Washington, Marymoor Park at the north end, Lake Sammamish State Park facilities at the south end, and the scenic East Lake Sammamish Trail corridor. The water depths are represented through a dramatic gradient flowing from light blue in shallow areas to rich deep blue plunging to the impressive 105-foot maximum depth, while every bay, the nine boat launch lanes, swimming beaches, great blue heron rookery, public slalom course, prime kokanee and cutthroat fishing zones, the East Lake Sammamish Trail, and distinctive features are precisely laser-etched into the multi-layered wood construction. This stunning three-dimensional masterpiece beautifully captures the exceptional clarity rivaling Mount Rainier visitation numbers with over two million annual visitors, the genetically distinct native kokanee heritage, and vital connection between Lake Washington and the Cascade foothills where cultural significance as a gathering place for at least four Native American tribes meets modern Seattle metropolitan outdoor recreation in Washington's most rapidly growing and scenic region

  • True layered 3D construction. Not engraved or printed
  • More layers, more detail. Most competitors use 3 to 7 layers. These use 8 or 15 layers
  • Original blue depth gradient. Light to dark blue shows water depth clearly
  • Handmade hardwood frames. Built from locally sourced rough sawn lumber, not pre-made frames

These are built to be the most accurate and most detailed 3D lake maps available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these actually 3D or just engraved?

These are true 3D layered maps.

  • Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
  • Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
  • HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers

Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.

Where are these made?

Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.

  • Design
  • Cutting
  • Painting
  • Assembly
  • Frame building

The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.

Do you use real depth data?

Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.

I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.

Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?

Most marketplace sellers:

  • Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
  • Have no connection to the lakes
  • Cannot verify accuracy
  • Have long delays if a file is not available

This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.

Because I design everything myself:

  • I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
  • You get a more accurate map, faster

What is your lead time?

Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.

Tell me about the Cribbage Boards

These are different from the layered maps and are not something you will find elsewhere.

  • Made from a solid piece of Maple or Cherry
  • The lake is engraved as if drained
  • Then filled with blue tinted epoxy that is still transparent

You can see:

  • Channels
  • Humps
  • Points
  • Structure

Additional features:

  • 2 or 3 track options
  • Choice of peg colors
  • Hidden peg storage with a magnetic dovetail slider
  • Rubber feet so it does not slide on the table

It is a functional game board and a detailed lake model in one.
