Schoodic Lake in Piscataquis County, Maine

This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version

Schoodic Lake is a spectacular 7,021-acre deep glacial lake located in Lake View Plantation and Brownville in Piscataquis County, featuring crystal-clear water plunging to an astounding maximum depth of 185 feet with abundant dissolved oxygen at 150 feet, making it one of the deeper lakes in Maine and approximately 45 miles of scenic shoreline with a small drainage basin. The lake covers much of the western half of Lake View Plantation with tributaries draining Orson Bog, Norton Pond, and Jaquith Pond in eastern Brownville, while the south end of the lake overflows through Schoodic Stream five miles to the Piscataquis River, which flows 13 miles to its confluence with the Penobscot River at Howland. This legendary coldwater fishery provides exceptional habitat for Lake Trout (Togue), Brook Trout (Squaretail), and Landlocked Atlantic Salmon as the most desirable coldwater species present, along with Smallmouth Bass, White Sucker, Round Whitefish, Chain Pickerel, Yellow Perch, and Cusk (Burbot) creating a diverse ecosystem. The lake's exceptional depth, cold temperatures, and high oxygen levels make it perfect for trophy Lake Trout fishing year-round, while the pristine water quality supports natural fish reproduction without recent stocking. With two public boat launches providing convenient access including Knights Landing less than a quarter mile from vacation rentals, the lake is perfect for motorized boating, fishing, water skiing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, ice fishing, snowmobiling with direct access to ITS trails 111 and state corridor trails, and four-wheeling in surrounding wilderness areas

Located in central Piscataquis County approximately 30 miles northwest of Bangor near the small communities of Brownville and Lake View Plantation, Schoodic Lake sits within the Piscataquis River Valley Region famous for stunning Maine Highlands scenery and exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities. The surrounding area offers world-class attractions including Gulf Hagas, a series of spectacular gorges and waterfalls known as the "Grand Canyon of Maine" accessible from nearby Brownville, the famous 100-Mile Wilderness section of the Appalachian Trail beginning in nearby Monson, and Katahdin Iron Works State Historic Site showcasing the remains of Maine's most significant 19th-century iron operation with a restored blast furnace and beehive charcoal kiln. Visitors can explore Borestone Mountain Sanctuary with a few hours' hike rewarding climbers with panoramic vistas of Onawa Trestle and Sebec Lake from the summit, Peaks-Kenny State Park on 839-acre Sebec Lake offering sandy beaches and 10 miles of hiking trails, and the quaint town of Dover-Foxcroft 12 miles away serving as the Piscataquis County seat with the historic Center Theatre from 1940, The Mill complex overlooking the Piscataquis River with boutique hotel and café, the Blacksmith Shop Museum dating to 1863, and the famous annual Maine Whoopie Pie Festival each October. The region provides exceptional year-round recreation including ATV trails throughout Piscataquis County's vast forests, hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails, remote canoe routes, hunting for moose, black bear, grouse, and deer in rich wildlife habitat, plus access to over 100 cataloged waterfalls in the southern Piscataquis region alone. Nearby towns including Milo with the Harrigan Learning Center & Museum and annual Black Fly Festival, Monson gateway to Moosehead Lake Region, and Brownville with direct trail access make Schoodic Lake the perfect base camp for exploring Maine's magnificent wilderness where outdoor adventure meets small-town charm

This magnificent handcrafted laser-cut wooden topographical map of Schoodic Lake would create a breathtaking centerpiece in your Maine fishing camp, wilderness lodge, or home, celebrating your connection to one of Piscataquis County's deepest and most pristine glacial lakes spanning over 7,000 acres. The artistic design features a natural wood top layer that beautifully showcases the lake's expansive surface covering much of Lake View Plantation with approximately 45 miles of irregular shoreline, the distinctive tributaries draining Orson Bog, Norton Pond, and Jaquith Pond, and Schoodic Stream outlet flowing to the Piscataquis River, while the water depths are represented through a dramatic gradient flowing from light blue in shallower areas to rich deep blue plunging to the astounding 185-foot maximum depth where abundant dissolved oxygen supports coldwater species at exceptional depths. Every bay, island, the two public boat launches including Knights Landing, ITS snowmobile trail access points, prime trophy Lake Trout fishing zones in the deep basins, and the distinctive features of this deep glacial lake formed over 12,000 years ago are precisely laser-etched into the multi-layered wood construction. This stunning three-dimensional masterpiece beautifully captures the exceptional depth, pristine coldwater fishery heritage, and wilderness character of this beloved Maine Highlands treasure that attracts anglers from around the globe seeking trophy Togue, Salmon, and Brook Trout in waters rivaling the clarity and depth of any lake in the northeastern United States

These are built to be the most accurate and most detailed 3D lake maps available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these actually 3D or just engraved?

These are true 3D layered maps.

  • Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
  • Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
  • HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers

Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.

Where are these made?

Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.

  • Design
  • Cutting
  • Painting
  • Assembly
  • Frame building

The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.

Do you use real depth data?

Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.

I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.

Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?

Most marketplace sellers:

  • Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
  • Have no connection to the lakes
  • Cannot verify accuracy
  • Have long delays if a file is not available

This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.

Because I design everything myself:

  • I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
  • You get a more accurate map, faster

What is your lead time?

Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.

Tell me about the Cribbage Boards

These are different from the layered maps and are not something you will find elsewhere.

  • Made from a solid piece of Maple or Cherry
  • The lake is engraved as if drained
  • Then filled with blue tinted epoxy that is still transparent

You can see:

  • Channels
  • Humps
  • Points
  • Structure

Additional features:

  • 2 or 3 track options
  • Choice of peg colors
  • Hidden peg storage with a magnetic dovetail slider
  • Rubber feet so it does not slide on the table

It is a functional game board and a detailed lake model in one.
