Smith Mountain Lake in Bedford, Franklin, and Pittsylvania Counties, Virginia

This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version

Smith Mountain Lake is Virginia's second largest and most popular freshwater lake, spanning 20,600 acres with an impressive maximum depth of 250 feet near the dam and averaging 55 feet throughout, earning its nickname as the Jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Created in 1966 when the Smith Mountain Dam impounded the Roanoke and Blackwater Rivers at Smith Mountain Gap, this magnificent reservoir stretches 40 miles through the scenic Blue Ridge foothills with over 500 miles of pristine shoreline dotted with residential homes, marinas, and waterfront communities. The lake operates as part of a unique pumped-storage hydroelectric system managed by Appalachian Power, where water levels naturally fluctuate one to two feet daily as electricity is generated and then pumped back from Leesville Lake below the dam. Renowned as one of Virginia's premier fisheries, Smith Mountain Lake consistently ranks among the top bass fishing destinations in the state, hosting ESPN Bassmaster Elite Series tournaments and producing numerous citation striped bass including a former state record 43-pound rockfish, while also offering excellent populations of largemouth and smallmouth bass, black crappie, bluegill, yellow perch, and multiple catfish species that thrive in the lake's clear waters and diverse habitat of rocky points, submerged timber, boat docks, and deep channels

Nestled in the heart of Virginia's Blue Ridge region between Roanoke and Lynchburg, Smith Mountain Lake sits within Bedford County on the north shore, Franklin County on the southwest, and Pittsylvania County near the dam, offering easy access to spectacular attractions and outdoor adventures. The lake is bordered by the 1,500-acre Smith Mountain Lake State Park featuring camping, cabins, beach swimming, hiking trails, boat rentals, and golf, while the towns of Moneta, Huddleston, Union Hall, and Penhook provide charming lakeside communities with marinas, restaurants, and vacation rentals. Just 30 minutes from the lake, visitors can explore downtown Roanoke with its iconic 100-foot illuminated Roanoke Star atop Mill Mountain, the Taubman Museum of Art, Center in the Square cultural complex, historic City Market dating to 1882, and Black Dog Salvage warehouse featured on DIY's Salvage Dawgs television show. The region offers access to the world-famous Blue Ridge Parkway with its stunning overlooks including Mabry Mill and Peaks of Otter, Bedford's moving National D-Day Memorial honoring the community that lost the most soldiers per capita on June 6, 1944, Booker T. Washington National Monument, Franklin County Distilleries celebrating the area's moonshine heritage as the former Moonshine Capital of the World, the 30-mile Roanoke River Greenway for biking and hiking, Virginia's Triple Crown hiking trio of McAfee Knob, Dragon's Tooth, and Tinker Cliffs along the Appalachian Trail, Explore Park's 1,100 acres with mountain biking and Treetop Quest aerial adventure course, and numerous craft breweries and wineries along the Virginia Blue Ridge Cheers Trail

This spectacular laser-cut wooden map of Smith Mountain Lake would make a magnificent statement piece in your lakefront home, mountain cabin, or office, capturing the grandeur and beauty of Virginia's largest lake contained entirely within the Commonwealth. The intricate handcrafted design showcases the lake's distinctive 40-mile serpentine shape as it winds through three counties, featuring a natural wood top layer that elegantly highlights the 500 miles of detailed shoreline including countless coves, the Hales Ford Bridge crossing, major tributaries like the Roanoke and Blackwater River arms, numerous islands, the Smith Mountain Dam, and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountain landscape. The water depth is dramatically illustrated through a graduated light blue to dark blue gradient that captures the stunning variations from shallow protected coves perfect for swimming and fishing to the remarkable 250-foot depths near the dam, visually representing one of the deepest reservoirs in the eastern United States and creating a breathtaking three-dimensional tribute to this engineering marvel. Whether commemorating trophy striped bass catches during sunrise fishing trips, exhilarating wakeboarding sessions across glassy waters, peaceful sunset cruises with family, weekend gatherings at your lakeside retreat, or simply celebrating your deep connection to Virginia's most beloved recreational paradise, this museum-quality artwork serves as both sophisticated conversation piece and treasured reminder of unforgettable moments spent on Smith Mountain Lake's pristine waters beneath the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains

  • True layered 3D construction. Not engraved or printed
  • More layers, more detail. Most competitors use 3 to 7 layers. These use 8 or 15 layers
  • Original blue depth gradient. Light to dark blue shows water depth clearly
  • Handmade hardwood frames. Built from locally sourced rough sawn lumber, not pre-made frames

These are built to be the most accurate and most detailed 3D lake maps available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these actually 3D or just engraved?

These are true 3D layered maps.

  • Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
  • Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
  • HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers

Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.

Where are these made?

Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.

  • Design
  • Cutting
  • Painting
  • Assembly
  • Frame building

The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.

Do you use real depth data?

Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.

I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.

Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?

Most marketplace sellers:

  • Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
  • Have no connection to the lakes
  • Cannot verify accuracy
  • Have long delays if a file is not available

This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.

Because I design everything myself:

  • I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
  • You get a more accurate map, faster

What is your lead time?

Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.

Tell me about the Cribbage Boards

These are different from the layered maps and are not something you will find elsewhere.

  • Made from a solid piece of Maple or Cherry
  • The lake is engraved as if drained
  • Then filled with blue tinted epoxy that is still transparent

You can see:

  • Channels
  • Humps
  • Points
  • Structure

Additional features:

  • 2 or 3 track options
  • Choice of peg colors
  • Hidden peg storage with a magnetic dovetail slider
  • Rubber feet so it does not slide on the table

It is a functional game board and a detailed lake model in one.
