Tiogue Lake in Kent County, Rhode Island

This map has 8 layers

Tiogue Lake is a 226-acre freshwater reservoir located in the town of Coventry in Kent County, Rhode Island, part of the scenic Pawtuxet River watershed. This man-made lake features a spacious open water area measuring approximately half a mile wide by nearly a mile long, complemented by various quiet bays and coves perfect for exploration. With an average depth of six feet and numerous natural features including protruding stumps and rocks, Tiogue Lake offers a peaceful setting surrounded by tree-lined shores and residential development. The lake was historically formed as a reservoir in an area once known as Pleasant Vale and later Barclay, named after the Scottish Quaker minister Robert Barclay by the Potter family who established textile mills in the region. By the late nineteenth century, the industrial mill operations ceased and the area transformed into a popular summer colony destination, evolving into the tranquil lakeside community it is today. Located just off Interstate 95 at Exit 7, the lake provides convenient access through multiple boat launches including the Korea-Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park on Arnold Road and a residential boat ramp on North Glen Drive, making it easily accessible for both residents and visitors exploring the Rhode Island countryside.

Tiogue Lake is renowned as an excellent fishing destination, regularly stocked with trout multiple times throughout the spring season by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. Anglers can expect to catch a diverse array of fish species including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, lake trout, brown trout, white perch, brown bullhead, bluegill, and bridle shiner, with the southern end of the lake featuring submerged structures and natural vegetation that serve as prime bass habitat, while northern coves attract pickerel and perch enthusiasts. The lake supports primarily car-top boats, canoes, and kayaks due to its shallow nature and residential character, with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour for watercraft to ensure safety. Korea-Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park offers benches along the lakeshore for relaxation and wildlife observation, while the surrounding Coventry area provides numerous recreational opportunities including hiking at the George B. Parker Woodland and Big River Management Area, exploring the historic Nathanael Greene Homestead from 1770, and enjoying the scenic Washington Secondary Bike Path. The lake's proximity to Providence, just a short drive to the north, and its location between major New England destinations makes it an ideal spot for both local residents and visitors seeking a peaceful day of fishing, paddling, picnicking, or simply enjoying Rhode Island's natural beauty. Coventry offers welcoming local restaurants, shops, and seasonal farmers markets, providing visitors with authentic New England hospitality and fresh local cuisine to complement their lakeside adventures.
