Lake Travis is an 18,930-acre reservoir on the Colorado River in the Texas Hill Country, stretching 65 miles northwest from western Travis County near Austin through a highly serpentine course into southern Burnet County. Created in 1942 with the completion of Mansfield Dam by the Lower Colorado River Authority, this man-made reservoir serves as the crown jewel of the Highland Lakes system and the primary flood control reservoir for Central Texas, with water levels that can fluctuate 10 to 20 feet seasonally. Featuring 271 miles of dramatic shoreline characterized by steep limestone cliffs, rocky coves, and crystal-clear emerald waters, Lake Travis reaches a maximum depth of 210 feet near Mansfield Dam, making it the deepest lake in Texas, with an average depth of 62 feet throughout. The reservoir's limestone bottom creates the distinctive clear blue water that distinguishes it from other Texas lakes, while its serpentine shape forms numerous protected coves and inlets perfect for exploration. Located just 20 miles west of downtown Austin and spanning communities including Lakeway, Bee Cave, Lago Vista, Briarcliff, Spicewood, and Hudson Bend, Lake Travis has earned recognition as the most visited freshwater recreational destination in Texas, attracting thousands of visitors year-round to experience its stunning Texas Hill Country setting with spectacular sunsets and approximately 300 days of sunshine annually
Lake Travis offers world-class recreational opportunities that extend far beyond traditional lake activities, making it a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers. The reservoir supports excellent fishing for Largemouth Bass, Guadalupe Bass, White Bass, Striped Bass, Channel Catfish, Flathead Catfish, and various sunfish species, with numerous marinas providing full-service facilities including boat slips, rentals, fuel docks, and yacht clubs. Over 50 boat rental companies offer everything from standup paddleboards and kayaks to luxury houseboats, party barges, and yacht charters, while the lake's impressive depth makes it one of the few Texas lakes suitable for scuba diving, with popular dive sites at Windy Point Park and other locations. Thrill-seekers can experience Lake Travis Zipline Adventures, featuring Texas's longest zipline at over 2,800 feet soaring above the lake, or challenge themselves at Waterloo Adventures, a 600-foot floating obstacle course with climbing walls and balance beams. The Lower Colorado River Authority and Travis County operate 15 parks along the shoreline, including Pace Bend Park with nine miles of waterfront and primitive camping, Mansfield Dam Park offering picnicking and swimming near the dam, Hippie Hollow Park as Texas's only legal clothing-optional park, and numerous other facilities with boat ramps, hiking trails, and beach access. Visitors can dine at The Oasis on Lake Travis, known as the "Sunset Capital of Texas" and the largest outdoor restaurant in the Hill Country, explore local wineries and craft breweries, shop at Hill Country Galleria, enjoy live music venues throughout the area, or relax at the Lakeway Resort and Spa overlooking the water, all while experiencing the unique blend of natural beauty and vibrant Austin culture that defines the Lake Travis lifestyle

The difference between standard and HD maps is the number of layers. Standard maps have 1 land layer and 7 water layers. " The HD lake maps have 1 land layer and 14 water layers. So twice the detail. The HD Maps are limited to Extra Large, " XX Large, and Gigantic sizes only. On the smaller sizes the depth change of the wood is too extreme and you end up losing detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these actually 3D or just engraved?
These are true 3D layered maps.
- Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
- Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
- HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers
Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.
Where are these made?
Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.
- Design
- Cutting
- Painting
- Assembly
- Frame building
The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.
Do you use real depth data?
Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.
I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.
Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?
Most marketplace sellers:
- Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
- Have no connection to the lakes
- Cannot verify accuracy
- Have long delays if a file is not available
This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.
Because I design everything myself:
- I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
- You get a more accurate map, faster
What is your lead time?
Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.
Tell me about the Cribbage Boards
These are different from the layered maps and are not something you will find elsewhere.
- Made from a solid piece of Maple or Cherry
- The lake is engraved as if drained
- Then filled with blue tinted epoxy that is still transparent
You can see:
- Channels
- Humps
- Points
- Structure
Additional features:
- 2 or 3 track options
- Choice of peg colors
- Hidden peg storage with a magnetic dovetail slider
- Rubber feet so it does not slide on the table
It is a functional game board and a detailed lake model in one.
