West Crooked Lake is a pristine 279-acre lake nestled in the towering pines of the Paul Bunyan State Forest in Hubbard County, Minnesota, located seven miles northwest of Nevis and seventeen miles northeast of Park Rapids. Featuring a maximum depth of 50 feet and approximately 5 miles of scenic shoreline, this Class 25 lake represents one of Minnesota's deep, clear, hard water lakes with an irregular shaped shoreline providing ideal habitat for diverse fish populations. The lake supports exceptional fishing opportunities with good populations of both bluegill in the 6 to 8 inch range and black crappie averaging 9 to 10 inches, while northern pike are abundant and walleye along with largemouth bass provide additional angling action. Also present are yellow perch, pumpkinseed, rock bass, and multiple bullhead species thriving in varied habitat including aquatic vegetation, rocky structure, and deeper basins perfect for all angling preferences from trophy game fish to family panfishing. A county-owned public boat access on the west shore of the lake provides easy entry for fishing boats, pontoons, kayaks, and canoes, while West Crooked Lake Resort offers additional boat ramp and dock space for guests, making this peaceful lake easily accessible yet maintaining its tranquil character surrounded by pristine forests where bald eagles soar overhead, loons call across morning waters, white-tailed deer browse along undeveloped shorelines, and black bears occasionally visit
Located in the heart of Minnesota's Heartland Lakes region, West Crooked Lake provides easy access to the charming communities of Nevis seven miles southeast and Park Rapids seventeen miles southwest, both offering exceptional small-town hospitality and world-class attractions. Just minutes away lies the tiny village of Dorset, famous as the Restaurant Capital of the World with four exceptional restaurants serving a population of only 22 residents, hosting the annual Taste of Dorset festival each August where 2,000 people sample culinary delights along the boardwalk from vendors across Minnesota. The area features the legendary 115-mile paved Paul Bunyan State Trail connecting Park Rapids to Walker through Nevis and Dorset, Minnesota's first rail-to-trail system and one of the nation's most popular bike routes traversing quiet forests, skirting pristine lakes, and passing through charming towns each claiming unique records including Nevis with the world's largest tiger musky sculpture, Akeley home to Minnesota's biggest Paul Bunyan statue with outstretched hand for photo opportunities, and Walker hosting the world's largest eelpout festival. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore magnificent Itasca State Park nineteen miles north where visitors walk barefoot across the mighty Mississippi River's headwaters beginning its 2,552-mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico, hike over 100 miles of trails through old-growth pines and witness 500-year-old trees, and enjoy Douglas Lodge National Historic Landmark dating to 1905. Additional area attractions include Forestedge Winery in Laporte producing unique northern fruit wines from rhubarb, chokecherry, raspberry, and blueberry, Long Lake Theater staging popular summer productions, Evergreen Gifts & Fun Park with go-carts, bumper boats, and mini golf, the Hubbard County Historical Museum in downtown Park Rapids, over 200 fishing lakes within twenty miles, Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge west of Park Rapids with world-class bird watching, ten local golf courses including championship layouts, hundreds of miles of ATV and snowmobile trails through state forests, and the annual Headwaters 100 Bike Ride each September winding through Lake George, Emmaville, Dorset and Nevis

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these actually 3D or just engraved?
These are true 3D layered maps.
- Made from 1/8 inch Baltic birch
- Standard maps have 8 layers. 1 land layer and 7 water layers
- HD maps have 15 layers. 1 land layer and 14 water layers
Each water layer uses a light to dark blue gradient so depth changes are easy to see.
Where are these made?
Everything is made in my shop in Minnesota.
- Design
- Cutting
- Painting
- Assembly
- Frame building
The frames start as locally sourced rough sawn hardwood and are built from scratch.
Do you use real depth data?
Yes, as an angler and map nerd, accuracy matters to me. I use multiple data sources, up to six, to find the most accurate lake contours available.
I would not hang an inaccurate map in my house and I will not send one to yours.
Why buy from Horn Dog Maps instead of Etsy or marketplace sellers?
Most marketplace sellers:
- Buy pre-made cut files, often from overseas
- Have no connection to the lakes
- Cannot verify accuracy
- Have long delays if a file is not available
This leads to lower accuracy and longer lead times, often 6 to 8 weeks.
Because I design everything myself:
- I can create a new lake mockup in about 30 minutes
- You get a more accurate map, faster
What is your lead time?
Most orders ship in 1.5 to 2 weeks depending on the time of year.
Tell me about the Cribbage Boards
These are different from the layered maps and are not something you will find elsewhere.
- Made from a solid piece of Maple or Cherry
- The lake is engraved as if drained
- Then filled with blue tinted epoxy that is still transparent
You can see:
- Channels
- Humps
- Points
- Structure
Additional features:
- 2 or 3 track options
- Choice of peg colors
- Hidden peg storage with a magnetic dovetail slider
- Rubber feet so it does not slide on the table
It is a functional game board and a detailed lake model in one.
