Unique Cribbage Boards That Actually Tell a Story
Share
Most cribbage boards are fine. They do the job, they get put away after the game, and nobody thinks much about them until the next time someone deals the cards. If you are looking for unique cribbage boards instead of the standard option, you are probably after something specific: a board with a little more meaning behind it, something that gets noticed before the game even starts.
This guide covers what actually makes a cribbage board worth buying, plus a closer look at custom lake-shaped boards from Horn Dog Maps, a small Minnesota operation that laser cuts each one from locally sourced wood.
What to Look for in a Unique Cribbage Board
Not every cribbage board marketed as unique actually is. Here is what separates a board worth buying from one that just looks different in a product photo.
Material and Construction
Solid wood holds up to years of use in a way that thin laminate or printed surfaces do not. A board that gets handled, stacked, and pulled out every game night needs to be built for it. Look for real wood construction, not a printed design on a cheap base.
A Design That Means Something
The boards that get noticed are not the ones with a generic pattern. They are the ones shaped around something specific: a lake, a state, a place that actually matters to the person playing. A custom shape is a different category of unique cribbage board than a novelty pattern picked off a shelf.
Permanent, Quality Peg Holes
CNC-drilled peg holes are perfectly aligned and hold their shape over time. Nothing is more distracting or hard to follow on a cribbage board than misaligned holes. This is one of the easiest ways to tell a well-made board from a mass-produced one just by running a finger across the surface
Made to Order, Not Mass Produced
A board made to order, built around a specific lake or place at the time you order it, is going to carry more meaning than something pulled from a warehouse shelf. It also tends to mean better attention to detail per piece, since the maker is not optimizing for volume.
My Cribbage Boards: Built Around Your Lake
I take the custom shape idea and apply it directly to the lake that matters most to the person playing. Each cribbage board is 3D carved with a CNC from locally sourced wood into the actual outline of a real lake.
Once the carving is done, the lake bed is filled with blue epoxy to give the impression of water. The shallower parts come out a lighter blue and the deeper parts a darker blue, the same depth effect you see in the wall maps, just built into something you can play on.
The lake name, roads, and lake stats are then laser etched into the top of the board. For the skunk line I use a fish icon instead of a skunk, because this is a fishing crowd and it felt right.
The pegs are heavy metal, not the cheap painted wood ones that come with most boards, and you get your choice of peg colors. The peg slot is covered with a dovetail slider with an embedded magnet that holds everything securely in place until you are ready to play. Flip it over and there are rubber feet on the bottom to keep the board from sliding around the table and to protect it from any spills that might happen mid-game.
I started Horn Dog Maps because I wanted something for my own lake and could not find it anywhere else. That same thinking is behind every board I make.
Here are a few examples of what this looks like in practice:
The Lake Vermilion board in maple shows the lake's actual shape 3d carved into the surface, pulled from the same mapping data I use in my wall maps.

Lake Minnetonka is available in both maple and cherry, with the lake's many bays and channels etched in fine detail across the board.

Mille Lacs Lake, one of the most requested boards I make, is available in both wood tones and includes the county stats etched right into the design.

For something a little different, the Lake Superior board captures the entire lake at a scale that still keeps the contour detail sharp.

Who a Custom Lake Cribbage Board Is Actually For
This style of board makes the most sense for a few specific situations, more so than a generic gift list would suggest.
For the cabin that has had the same family cribbage game going for decades, a board shaped like the actual lake outside the window turns a nightly habit into something with a little more weight to it. For a gift, a custom lake cribbage board works especially well when you already know the answer to one question: which lake. If you know that, the rest of the decision is easy.
It also works well for someone who already has one of my wall maps and wants something functional to go with it. The board and the map share the same lake outline, so they read as a set even though I sell them separately.
Lake-shaped boards are not just for personal gifts. I also make custom logo cribbage boards for businesses, perfect for client gifts, closing gifts, or anything that calls for something a little more memorable than a standard promotional item.

A Cribbage Board Worth Pulling Out
The difference between a mass produced cribbage board and a unique one usually comes down to whether it means anything. A board shaped like the lake someone has fished for thirty years, played cards at every summer, or just cannot stop thinking about, is going to get pulled out and talked about in a way a generic board never will.
Start by figuring out the lake. The rest tends to take care of itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions people ask me about unique cribbage boards.
What makes a cribbage board unique instead of just decorative?
A unique cribbage board typically has a custom design tied to something specific, like a real place, rather than a generic pattern. Quality construction, like solid wood and CNC drilled peg holes, also separates a board built to last from one that is purely decorative. I build all of mine with both in mind
Can I get a cribbage board for a specific lake?
Yes. I organize cribbage boards by lake, so each board is 3D carved into the actual shape of a specific body of water. I have boards available for lakes across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and beyond, and I am always adding new lakes by request.
Are handcrafted cribbage boards more durable than store-bought ones?
Generally yes. Solid wood construction with laser-cut detail holds up to repeated use better than printed or laminate surfaces, which tend to wear faster, especially around the peg holes.
How long does it take to get a custom cribbage board made?
Since I make each board to order, plan for some lead time, especially around gifting seasons like Father's Day and the holidays. Check my current turnaround time directly on the website.
Do you offer wholesale or consignment options for retailers?
Yes. I sell through a network of retail partners across Minnesota and Wisconsin and I am always open to adding the right fit. If you run a bait shop, sporting goods store, gift shop, cabin supply store, or any retail location that serves lake country customers, my maps tend to sell themselves. I offer wholesale pricing with healthy margins and made to order fulfillment, so there are no minimum inventory requirements on your end. With over 1,700 lakes mapped across the US and Canada, I can almost always supply something relevant to a local market. Reach out directly to talk wholesale pricing and details.
